I think murderer is a harsh label to give him, but I don't understand why he won't see the victim's family. That's all they've asked for - to speak to him, yet he won't give them the time of day.
I'm sure it would be uncomfortable for him and it's not easy for him either, but if you're responsible for the death of someone's family, the least you could do is actually speak with them.
