The third film was supposed to retcon the motive.
Originally the plan was they were going to bring Stu back and reveal that he manipulated the entire events of the first film, to kill Sydney for rejecting him romantically by way of destroying Billy's life (revealing to his family his dad's infidelity, destroying his parents marriage and then manipulating Billy into murdering Sydney's mom and then Sydney herself).
But the studio vetoed it because of Columbine and they created a contrived plot twist where the real mastermind was Sydney's bastard half-brother, who wanted revenge when Syd's mom rejected him/refused to have anything to do with him when he located her after being abandoned by him.
