One of the finest experiences ever committed to celluloid

another overrated piece of weebshit

one of the GOAT soundtracks

@90085660
I love anime adaptations. Excellent doubles buddy.

One of my fave. Had my gf watch it ("i want you to watch one of my everytime fav movie"-tier) and a couple of weeks after we had a fight were she literally shout at me "I didnt even understand it". Like I should feel ashamed bc grill brains cant process kino movies lmao!

Great movie.

This, the whole thing made no sense at all, it clearly needed worldbuilding but it didn't get any.
>dude take some drugs lmao giant baby will explode!!!!!!!

>Angry roasties spottetd

this

Is this an european only kino or burger know it as well?

The story is legit nonsensical. Great soundtrack and visuals.

It's wonderful. Manga is better, but the film is just fucking wonderful. It's interesting that all the Japanese dialogue was recorded with any animation having been done, with the animation being built around the performances. The music was also composed before any animation was done.

I like it more than the manga. It peaks in the first 10 minutes but what a damn ten minutes they are. Also the rest of the movie is still well above average by science-fiction movie standards.

It's Kanye West's favourite film.

Matapiecccce

Its nothing compared to the manga

Especially on Tetsuo side. He's WAY more powefull in the manga.

Akira and Ghost in the Shell are the only anime I really love!!!FACT!!!

good but overrated by weeb fucks

what other animes are like this or cowboy bebop? is it just the older ones that had this style? everything else is way too weeb with high pitched screeching or cat ears or magic dragons or some dumb shit.

i watched it recently. though i enjoyed the movie. i didnt think i "truly get it". whats its all actually about user?

Ghost in the Shell movies and series feels similiar to Akira

watch redline
it's the right kind of weeb

How such a movie only costs 10 million Dolars ?

Anime is huge in Latin America, always has been.

japanese animators are paid in peanuts

What should I watch lads?

Dubbed or Subbed. I've enjoyed them both in the past

westernized trash to appeal to white overlords

inflation aside, there's something to be said about smaller cohesive talented teams over boating the budget with more people and losing the focus of the vision

subbed nigger

Was kinda disappointed by how they handled Akira in the movie(lol he dead nigga).

Did you watch gambling kino yet ?

Not really surprised about Tetsuo. First they drug him, experiment on him and attack him. Kaneda a shit, fucking mendling brat.

was he not dead in the manga? that's a pretty important plot point

tetsuo could've used his powers for good instead of being a retard on a power trip

Nah, he was bro with Tetsuo after he found him.

The after 2001 dubbed version is quite ok...if you watch the pre-2001 dub version its basically an invented story.
In 1990 japaneses did not deliver a proper translated script so the people who worked to adapt the script had to made up and add a lot of random things.

For whom ? Did you see what kind of people lived in that city ?

what the fuck, I need to read the manga

The manga is very different from the movie. The movie was basically an alternative story. When the movie come out the manga wasnt even finished yet.

>It's interesting that all the Japanese dialogue was recorded with any animation having been done
Isn't this how it's usually done? How would they sync up the mouths to the dialogue otherwise?

>How would they sync up the mouths to the dialogue otherwise?
>implying they ever do

Lumping in all anime under one label is the dumbest thing you can do.
Just look up genres you like and watch what looks cool.

Akira is the only anime I can think of where they actually bother syncing the mouths correctly.

He means thst they did more complex lip syncing instead of lip flaps

Neo Tokyo

An amazing movie in terms of animation and visuals, as well as stunning OST.

Poorly written screen adaptation of a manga that was far superior.

This has deserved a multi movie recreation beat for beat with the Manga with that same passion of animation but we will never get it.

Great, a kino anime movie.

Mix A Clockwork Orange and Scanners with some Bonnie and Clyde.

Lolwut?

Cowboy Bebop is boring shit.
Just nips trying to make an "epic" western anime with randumb exploshuns and no plot.

I grew up with this movie. I saw it on tv and I wanted to have it. Worse than I wanted porn.

I remember I once saw an ad of it on NHK World Channel and waited to watch it on a Saturday night for the whole summer but that night my grandma visited us and I couldn't get tv. It must be sometimes around 1993.
I was literally a shithead back then and didn't know where I could look to get this thing.
Another time my parents took me to an exhibition where they put a live size model of ED209 and "educational video games" (that was when PC was just getting popular in some places). One booth was illegally screening this movie and again I only saw the part when Tetsuo dug out the underground container. I kicked and screamed to stay but I couldn't say what I really wanted.
(My parents were nice people but I brought them nothing but shame but that's another story )
Looking back now it's still magical but I can understand like all movies it is becoming irrelevant. The time has changed and we have a better sense about everything that had made the movie cool.

>When we become extremely technically advanced but our morality and ethics have not matched this progress and it's devestating consequences
>2 times the city is utterly blown away WWII
sometimes I put on my headphones and listen to Requiem which is like the same sequence of events as the movie

When are we getting live action led by a diverse cast of color and no whites?

great comic cant wait to see the main played as a black female due to hollywood and they when their not reaping children

>complaining that a hypothetical film adaptation of a japanese anime film would have no white people in it.

Next-level Sup Forums-posting.

thanks for the post, interesting perspectives

cool, very cool

worthy enough to be considered among movies and not among anime

>The story is legit nonsensical
It's fucking straightforward as hell.

>Poorly written screen adaptation of a manga that was far superior.

I'll re read the comic book and get at you. I think the movie has all the essentials of the story, the comic (if I recall correctly) only had more filler details\scenes

MD Geist

The only way to this justice would be a 500 million 10 part Netflix series based on the 6 volume Manga.

And even then I'd probably be sick.

Anime hardly has many actual japanese people in it a lot of them are westaboos. Spike spiegel, Edward Elric, lelouch lamperouge and britannia. Naruto is fucking blonde haired and blue eyed

The movie was made as a love letter to Japanese fans of the manga. Which is why it feels impenetrable to some western viewers. It's not, you just need to pay attention. Translation woes don't help.

Yes but NOT in live action the artistic style of manga/anime cannot be translated to film

Wicked city, cyber city oedo 808.

This.

Its all over the place. Gimme a quick STRAIGHTFORWARD rundown then?

great animation, worldbuilding and all that. But didn't they botch the story from the manga? Never read it so idk

It's fucking amazing. People who complain about the story are retarded.

Only the first 3 (out of 6) volumes of the manga had been released when the movie was made. Even though the manga ends in a similar fashion it continues the story past the ending of the movie, basically Tokyo is a post apoc wasteland, a cult is formed around Akira with Tetsuo as his Vader and much more.

Keit-Ai is better.

>Anime hardly has many actual japanese people in it a lot of them are westaboos. Spike spiegel, Edward Elric, lelouch lamperouge and britannia. Naruto is fucking blonde haired and blue eyed

You know they are not real people right ? I'm not sure sure why you would bring up Naruto, maybe that is just your default reference for all anime... on account of your retardation.

...

Already a thing.

huh, makes sense. I liked the movie, but the story felt a little wonky at times. Like it wasn't going anywhere

Osamu Tezuka's Metroplis

ED2: youtube.com/watch?v=m4DyTjrruVo

you know asia has western standards of beauty, right?

They don't care much if Hollywood makes anime movies with white people- they don't care at all

the plot works for a stand alone movie

Cyber City Oedo 808 should be watched for the intro-music alone.

>was he not dead in the manga?

He's alive, although being a vessel for "the power" substantially erodes his personality. He speaks barely a word and seems most of the time to be half asleep.

Kek

>They don't care much if Hollywood makes anime movies with white people- they don't care at all

I don't think that not caring about something is a positive indication that they (Asia) approve of something.

akira cannot contain his powers at the beginning of the film and blows up most of tokio. Tetsuo and the gang comes in contact with one of the other test subjects and after significant trauma, it's clear that tetsuo has the same gifts. Tetsuos powers grows at a rapid pace, so much that he cannot contain it and is in constant pain. After a confrontation with the other test subjects, he realise that none of them have the same amount of power as he does and seeks out the only one of them that does. Akira. But akira is no more and Tetsuos powers keep growing. Growing to the point where his physical being cannot contain the power and he mutates into a tumot grownig out of controll. The other test subject sacrifice themselves and use their powers to send tetsuo to another dimension instead of having him destroy the world.
At the end "I am Tetsuo" is an indication that tetsuo has becom a deity in another reality.

Any questions?

Here’s how I’d adapt it for Hollywood
>takes in place in Neo Manhattan after a large explosion
>people are forbidden from the explosion zone
>main characters are two guys in a bike gang, race doesn’t matter, but for this sake, Tetsuo and Kaneda
>Testsuo obviously has a chip on his shoulder because Kaneda is the more capable biker
>they end up in a fight with another gang and because Tetsuo is hurt, they’re forced to flee into the explosion zone
>there, they crash after trying to avoid a kid who appears out of thin air
>the kid uses his psychic power to help them escape the biker gang and get out of the explosion zone
>the next day Testuo blows off Kaneda because of events last night causing him to not feel good
>while he’s hanging out with his girlfriend, he’s attacked by the rival gang
>after they beat him up and tries to rape his girlfriend, Kaneda shows up but his presence angers Tetsuo, who uses his new psychic abilities to kill the gang members
>military group shows up and subdued Tetsuo before capturing him
>Kaneda is rescued by a group of resistance fighter who reveals that the explosion site is actually being used as a test site for experiments with psychic beings
>he agrees to help them infiltrate the facility
>meanwhile, Tetsuo meets the rest of the psychic children and undergoes experiments that causes him to hallucinate and go crazy
>he is driven by visions of Akira, a small Asian boy who is the original psychic and caused the original explosion, now placed in cryosleep because he is too dangerous
>tetsuo wants to prove he is stronger
>Kaneda’s infiltration causes a disturbance that allows Testuo to break the psychic chains placed on him by the military
>he destroys the facility and awakens Akita
>the two has a battle that devestates the military site
>Tetsuo seems to be winning but then he loses control of his powers and start to mutate into a giant monstrosity
>Kaneda uses a satellite gun to destroy the site, killing both

Overrated

Music is good, animation is good. But it's not an entertaining spectacle
Same with GitS.

Metropolis is better

Dude fuck off with your reductive reasoning.

Holy shit anons like you are stupid if you can't see the merit in at least Cowboy Bebop's aesthetic.

Akira > GitS > Metropolis

All three are pretty fucking great though and Metropolis is definitely underated.

>IIIIIII CAAAANT STOOP LOOOOOOOOOOVING YOOUUUUUUUUUU

disgusting
i want AKIRA to be filmed in Japan with USA Army taking the place of Colonel Shikishima
yeah USA as the "bad guys" making a coup d'etat, that would be interesting to see considering all they want is to stop Tetsuo and Akira at all costs

Except Otomo went out of his way to draw his characters in a naturalistically japanese-looking fashion that looks nothing like more traditional anime characters and makes it resoundingly clear that they're all supposed to be Japanese.

>it's not an entertaining spectacle
ask me how i know you're a troll

Nah, keep Shikishima Japanese and make it clear that he's the Japanese leader of the multinational military forces in the city.

Cast him with the Japanese equivalent of Chow Yun-fat so he's this classically handsome Asian guy with the towering physicality to match his persona.

Better than the manga with its postapocalyptic stalling second half.

I'd rank Metropolis over GiTS for the artwork alone, and I fucking love GiTS's aesthetic. It's just that Metropolis comes close to topping Akira in terms of artwork and production design.

The Colonel is actually a morally correct dude but both his leaders and subjects are corrupt / obsessed as fuck, have no constraint in combination with fucking with powers they don't understand. He is a man in a situation he can't control.

Manga wasn't finished when the movie came out.
