25 years ago a bunch of Marvel artists left the Big Two and decided to form their company, with blackjack and hookers. This company would eventually become the closest to a third competitor for DC and Marvel (lol) and the best known creator-owned comic book company out there.
For our final week, we'll be looking at modern Image, an age of superstar writers, popular artists, and... movie/TV pitches?
Next up is... this thing, Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky's Sex Criminals
Saga: Prophet: Fatale: Deadly Class: East of West:
I fucking hate how bad this comic got. That series of pages with the authors breaking the fourth wall was part of what made me realize it stopped being good.
I'm being an ass by breaking up this storytime but god damn this comic is so good at the start and became so bad.

I tried to give it an honest chance but I couldn't get past issue 2. It didn't offend me or anything, I just thought it was pretty boring and unengaging.

The concept is neat to me but essentially they try to make it run for several issues longer than it should

It's such a shame how the comics industry works: here you have an instant classic, simultainiously one of the greatest erotic AND comedy comics ever made, a comic capable of tackling romance, sexuality and sexual maturation like only the best japanese seinen manga can - it didn't win that Eisner for nothing -, a comic so unbelievably good...
And you get only six issues per year. That is if you're lucky. Or is that just five.
Meanwhile fuckind Dan Slott gets to make everybody hate Spider-Man comics twice a month.
It is a disgrace.

>For our final week, we'll be looking at modern Image, an age of superstar writers, popular artists, and... movie/TV pitches? I would appreciate it if you were to forever rid yourself of this sentiment and/or kill yourself.
Well with Zdarsky being put in Spectacular, that might change.

Wow, great counterargument, did your mommy write it for you? Seriously, what's your problem, mate?
I'm pretty sure I did.
Tyler Perez
What, Spider-Man comics could be good again after the abomination that was The Clone Conspiracy?
I hope so. Yet I'll bet you he'll be able to write more spider-books than Sex Criminals.
And I don't understand why.

You're the one who's mad, mate. I didn't sperg out out of nowhere to some random guy in Sup Forums. Seriously now, what's your damage?
Jaxon Bell
That you were being awfully sarcastic? Unless you weren't, in which case my bad, most people in Sup Forums don't hold a lot of love for Fraction or Sex Criminals for that matter

Then again there is a thread at this very moment talking about how that embarrassing piece of dogshit Deathstroke is somehow the best comic book DC is publishing currently.
I guess religiously reading capetrash has a negative effect your taste.

Just from the interview alone, he already gets the character ten times more than Slott does. Supposedly he's going to go back to focusing on the Peter Parker aspect of the book, which is always welcome.
Zachary Green
I'll report you for defending someone who trash-talks Image.

The true travesty of the industry is that they're still pumping this crap out. This comic did everything it needed to in the first two arcs. Maybe even just the FIRST arc. And yet here we are, still getting more issues while the quality is exponentially decaying. This comic and Saga are prime examples of why I don't buy Image comics until the series is over anymore. No matter how good they start, they always go on way too long and devolve into filler or just let the quality slide way down until the book is finally either mercy killed or reaches the natural conclusion it should have reached two years ago.
Also lmao at using the Eisners as a judge of quality.
Connor Evans
>allow people to get better acquainted with Image for 4 weeks, storytiming some of their best stories, and getting people interested on obscure titles like Elephantmen >storytime two of their titles for months too >make one silly jab at them >suddenly "trash talking" Image LOL

>That's absurd.
If you believe Sup Forums you'd think all comics are bad.
In one breath Sup Forums will malign cape comics for being soulless or irrelevant, then also crucify any works that try to have a message. There's no winning with the contrarians on this board.
Most of Image comics output are works with real creative integrity, that have aspirations. Sure, plenty are tv show pitches. But enough have substance to make it worth it.
Hunter Stewart
I'll respect that opinion. If you say so. Personally it's upsetting that shitty superhero comics get to go on forever while original, fresh, worthwhile material has to end. But that's me.
I just hope for the sake of comic book culture that you are willing to spew the same amount of vitriol towards the corporate superhero comic book industry.

>Most of Image comics output are works with real creative integrity, that have aspirations. Sure, plenty are tv show pitches. But enough have substance to make it worth it. This deserves a reaction image, but I'm not going to disrespect the storytimer like that.
Also Sup Forums doesn't hate all comics, don't be obtuse. I don't know if you're just rumproasted that you stepped into a storytime of a comic you liked that most of Sup Forums didn't, but there are a huge amount of comics that the majority of Sup Forums enjoys. Obviously there are dissenting opinions, but if you can't handle the bantz then why are you on Sup Forums to begin with? Perhaps you'd prefer /r/comics if you can't handle the fact that some people aren't completely enamored of Image.

This month's tribute covers are kinda telling of how far Image has come in 25 years. Yes, it was initially about a group of Marvel dudes doing their own thing, but make no mistake: It was all about building their own brands and merch.
It shows that the first thing a lot of them did when they got hold of their own destiny was make their own versions of X-Men. McFarlene broke this trend by basically making his own Batman. It wouldn't be until later when we started seeing actual new and different concepts.
