Or you could just legalize weed, make every state that does so richer as has been clearly demonstrated in the states that have, and cut down on the actual cash flow of the cartels while generating more tax revenue and decreasing opioid deaths at a fraction of the cost of a wall. Not to mention the money saved from not having to house marijuana-related offenders in prison or put them through the probation system. And without the revenue from the prohibition-inflated marijuana sales, the cartels wouldn't have the cash to be as influential in Mexico either.

You might have missed the part where states that have legalized weed also have lower rates of opioid abuse and death, and any reduction in profitability is smart. Even cutting something seemingly minor like 10% can be devastating, and if that cut also saves us money and generates revenue for states, why the fuck would you not?
Some cursory google shit says a marijuana legalization act would cut cartel profits by 20% on average and up to 50% for those that lean heavy on it currently. You can take that with a grain of salt since it's ballpark estimates of course.
