It's not one of those pretentious movies that critics dub artful or self-aware. It's a pretty straightforward coming-of-age movie, yes, but its quality comes from how sincere and heartfelt it is, and how none of the characters (except maybe for the douchey band kid) feel unrealistic. It's also surprisingly funny.
