Richie was old school and thought he deserved more respect and that he was owed loyalty, he was also manipualted by Junior into moving against Tony. Ralphie was a perfect ally, just a wild motherfucker who was also selfish as shit and unpredictable. They're the same in that they die in unexpected ways tho.

Then Ralph wins over Vito by a short margin, putting aside the whole fanuc thing he actively tried to become boss while Tony was in a coma. And when he was found out he couldn't even pretend to live a normal life.
Ralph though was a complete psychopath. Behaving like a childish brat while being able to get away with attacking and killing people is an obviously dangerous combination. And even before the whole HOOOARR ordeal the guys from the crew didn't like him, they just bear his behaviour because he'd bring in a lot of money.

I've read discussions on how David Chase still wasn't sure if Soprano's was going to last, even into season 2 so the decision to kill off Richie makes sense in that respect. After season 2 solidified Sopranos as a classic Chase now had to go back and create another sociopath character to make tension, it's probably not a coincidence both their names start with R and end with "ie" as ralphie is essentially a replacement Richie.
