Well they don't go into massive detail explaining who/what the aliens are and what their arsenal is comprised of but from what you see on screen they seem far to agile for tanks to matter.
You're not supposed to put any deep thought into the military tactics anyway.

they don't want to deploy tanks, drop bombs or nukes because the fictional story requires grunt soldiers to take a beating in order to give tom cruise something to do. but yes i agree it would've been more realistic if they had some dialogue to explain why their tanks/air could not be used, maybe the aliens blew up their factories and only soldiers with exo suits are left.
the director is a jew by the way. you know they don't give a fuck about explaining things to the goyim. just pay your $14 theater ticket, turn your brain off and be entertained.
movies & entertainment are a distraction, a brief respite from gazing into the abyss.
