I came to a realization the other day

I was watching pic related the other day and I came to a realisation: There are now only three significant types of horror movie genres.

>Z grade, lowest effort, lowest budget found footage with a zero-creativity demon/possession/creature/zombies deal.
>Horror comedies that consist almost entirely of meta-jokes and smirking OTT parodies of 80s culture.
>Films that are embarrassed to be horror and instead want to be allegories for some sort of psychological or social ill (e.g. depression, promiscuity, eating disorders) and usually can't be bothered to pay more than lip-service to proper horror themes such as fear, disgust or uneasiness.
Agree? Disagree? Don't give a shit?

Either way, press F to pay respects for:
>Unironic slasher
>Alien abduction/invasion
>Vampires and gothic
>Mummies
>Torture porn
>Killer rednecks
>Creature features and classics
>Werewolves
>Slow zombies
>Plague
>Ghosts/haunted houses
>Witches/cults
>Splatter
>Animal swarms
>Kids with mental powers

and absolutely nothing of value was lost

>Unironic slasher

whom tf is scared of that?

It seems theyre really making things better, OP! but this trend of possession horrors is the shittiest by far.

fpbp

>Plague
>what?

Horror that's about diseases or parasites infecting everyone, but not turning them into zombies. Stuff like Outbreak, the crazies, the Andromeda strain, slither, Cabin fever, contagion, carriers.

op pls

fpbp

horror as an end in itself is literally the lowest form of plebbery

Thread not going the way you wanted, OP?

Yea that movie sucks.

a lot of what you said is wrong, your opinion or reductionist and horror is a bad genre for people with no imagination, temperance or life experience. none of the old movies scared me even a little

I mean things change user. There are good movies in every genre (probably) but I do wish we'd get some good old gore fests Evil Dead/The Thing style.

Not me.

And yet its highly rated and is considered a great horror film. Something isn't right with the whole genre these days.

>none of the old movies scared me even a little
Sup Forums is 18+ fyi.

There's change and then there's a formerly diverse and high quality genre getting compressed into three basic styles with the occasional outlier. Even the action genre hasn't been gutted this badly.

VVitch in neither of it.

Garance is a cute! A CUTE!

horror films were never supposed to be scary

it's just a genre characterized by having dark themes, supernatural elements, and being atmosphere-heavy which ends up being pretty restrictive, which is why there is so much metaplay

YOU GOTTA CHECK THIS OUTTTTT

Disagree. Your definition of horror is too narrow. And your expectations are similarly out of sync. You seem to think horror means slasher, and that's simply not true. Maybe read some books and you'll have a better understanding of the genre. We're tired of the same old tropes that plague every horror movie. They've all been done, and most were never scary. This new "genre" of horror you're seeing is backlash from the horror genre of the last 20-30 years. It seeks realism and psychological horrors rather than actual antagonists.
That said, there's still a plethora of shitty horror movies coming out all the time. And there are good ones like It Follows and Lights Out that are good enough to watch.

Fuck me thats painfully accurate.

Only one I'd give a pass is Cabin in the Woods, because it had the balls to be a monster movie, not some psychological thriller.

The ironic snark was infuriating though.

Tip top b8 m8

what

horror is the only genre that gets away with with being pretentious without being boring

I kinda like this new wave of "indie" horrors. It's interesting and the films can be entertaining and unique such as Bone Tomahawk.

Bone Tomahawk was a unicorn. Even if it was just a western (another rotting genre) it would have stood out with its unusual pacing, cinematography and understated action. I definitely wouldn't associate it with the current wave of indie horror.
