It's meant to be a deconstruction of mech anime. It's not like a Western adaption would ever capture that, without making it an actual mech movie.

It's mostly a deconstruction of anime tropes, and centrally of Mech Anime.

The Western Equivilant would be a deconstruction of Star Wars, or the Sci Fi Epic (as Gundam is sometimes considered the Japanese Star Wars, in it's equivalent social impact)

But it's naturally hard to do a deconstruction of tropes, or of an entire genre, if they're entirely foreign to the audience. Doing something like that with Star Wars would work, because everyone in the West has seen Star Wars. Few people would have seen enough mech anime to get it.
