IMAX is a scam

Why else would you deliberately fuck up your aspect ratio, make a jarring editing even more jarring (e.g. Dunkirk), put yourself through restrictions without any improvments classic film can already provide?

Cause it looks cool ya DOOFUS

IMAX is one of the last things cinema has to maintain film screenings being 'events'.

I knew that watching Dunkirk at IMAX would provide 100x the experience watching it at home on a laptop would.

i need to make sure people on twitter know how big of a movie buff i am desu

I watched Dunkirk in imax and it didn't look fucked up, what are you talking about specifically?

resolution mainly

ASPECT RATIO

No it doesn't, it's jarring, way too pale (bear in mind that most directors don't know how to do color correcting anymore) sometimes they can't even get the lighting right between shots.

I find the editing in Dunkirk peculiar, and while I get why you would do that for artistic reasons, the changes in aspect ratio really take you out of the film.

shoulda just cropped the non-IMAX footage in dunkirk desu since it was already DMR blowed up anyway

It wasn't jarring.
basically this.

meant to quote this post

it was jarring, even my retard friend asked why it looked different

>It wasn't jarring.
You might not have noticed, but your brain did.

most of the time in other movies it's fine, you notice it once because it's barely used. But it's used so extensively in Dunkirk, especially toward the end when it's meant to be tense

>it's meant to be tense
Did Nolan ever say this? I just assumed that it was shot traditionally in shots that were impractical for IMAX with no thought about pacing. Some of the shots like the Commander on the mole and some shots with Rylance seemed out of place when I saw it in IMAX.

no I meant the end of the film is supposed to be tense, with the bomber diving on the mole and the fighter attacking the civilian yacht. It goes back and forth between the location in different aspect ratios.

but there was no consistency
the aspect ratio was apropos of nothing, the different stories both had 70 and 35mm mixed together

The aspect ratio doesn't change retard, you literally get 'more image' when you watch it in a true IMAX theater

Reminder that all these fuckers who are now crying about the aspect ratio changes have seen the film on their tiny little computer/TV screens where ofcourse you notice black bars appearing, while literally no one complained about this when the film was actually released in theaters.

Also you have to be quite a brainlet casual to think that IMAX is only about the visuals.

Saw it in IMAX, it was distracting but not by that much so as to sperg out about it.

stfu bitch

Yeah that's kinda my point. He didn't think (or didn't bother) about matching the aspect ratios (exemple: sequence 1. 70 rylance - 70 brannagh - 70 rylance sequence 2. 35 bane - 35 rylance - 35 commander). They just shot everything they coud in IMAX without thinking it through, that's lazy filmaking, and i'm not much of a perfectionnist.

I think your wrong, even in IMAX theaters, it does change. In regular theaters they just crop it, but in IMAX theaters you get fullscreen and black bars.

sound is virtually identical unless you go to a shitty theater

There's no black bars with projectors user, only the actual frame is projected. That's why the aspect ratio changes become so apparent when you watch it on a screen, because the black bars have to be displayed

What a dumb ignorant post.
A regular theater doesn’t have multi-thousand watt sound amplifiers, omni directional sound with speakers even from behind the screen that has microscopic holes for the sound to get through, sub bass capable of going as low as 20hz, speakers able to reach uncompressed 118 decibels with zero digital distortion and overall perfect acoustic treatment. Only a Dolby atmos can compare.

>drinking the IMAX pre-roll promo koolaid
go to a regular atmos theater and compare

Dolby atmos is not a regular theater

still much more common than 70mm 15 perf

Well ofcourse, but I was replying to some dumb casual saying that a regular theater has an identical sound to an IMAX, which is just absurdly ignorant

they just did that with steve jobs so I don't think it would have made sense for dunkirk
