Does anyone think back over the original three Star Wars movies and get depressed at what's become of the franchise? I feel like the OT is genuinely wonderful and unique as an achievement in cinema. Seeing it turn into a merchandising empire is a little sad.

I rewatched the OT recently and honestly it's overrated
they're not great movies

You could start to see the decline in ROTJ. Star Wars was always about merchandising though. I just don’t like the fact VII-IX is essential a soft reboot of the OT. There is no point, either make something new or leave it alone.

these have been toy movies since the get go... c'mon now.

Original is good but overrated. Empire is genuinely great.

Doesn't matter if it's the OT or the prequels, George Lucas is and always has been a hack.
The fans who made the films popular had more in common with Reddit than most other films.

Also, fuck this shit
youtube.com/watch?v=cGqAu9gj_F0

It was already a merch cow by the time ROTJ came out. Kick the nostalgia

Before the dark times, before the prequels, when people spoke of Star Wars there was reverence, as if it was holy scripture that bound together a generation and the only thing we could believe in. That time is over and now we live in a bleak vortex sucking us all into oblivion......fact.....

Pretty sure the Ewoks killed Star Wars as holy Scripture.

1 - 6 and R1 sucks. BvS sucks too.

>not liking wipe transitions

Come on guys let's all just admit that the none of the Star Wars movies are that great, but the Star Wars universe is so imaginative that it's hard not to defend them as being brilliant. The the sum of the parts far surpasses any one individual film, even the original trilogy.

>these have been toy movies since the get go... c'mon now.

No, there was something truly magical about the first two. Even Jedi still has a little spark. But Star Wars and Empire feel transcendent. The attached video is one of the greatest moments in cinema history just through its visuals and music but every single person who's even seen it, no matter where they're from or what language they speak, understands what it means!!!FACT!!! youtu.be/1gpXMGit4P8

it's okay to just watch the OT if you want to. you don't have to watch the other movies if they make you feel sad

because you were a fucking child, i'm sure children who watch the force awakens thinks that's just as magical.

>star wars was always just about toys
nope
anh and esb? categorically not. ofc they sold tons of toys after the fact
rotj? an element of this had crept into the production, yes
the prequels? nah. lucas just wanted to make ''his'' movies
the disney sequels? YES it's ALL about $$$$'s and nothing else matters

no star wars movies operate on nostalgia and nerd cred and should be left to die.

>Pretty sure the Ewoks killed Star Wars as holy Scripture

But the strength of the first two and the end battle/Luke/Vader/Emperor conflict in Jedi was enough to paper over that. Not even the fucking Ewoks can take that away.

Too bad they didn't follow through with the plan to hire Paul (Robocop, Total Recall) Verhoeven to Direct Jedi because we might have got a race of nude Amazonian's (ala Rae Dawn Chong in Quest for Fire) looking to breed with Hand and Luke and the end of the movie would have Luke giving a thumbs up to Ghost Obi Wan/Yoda/Annakin before he strips and joins the ensuing orgy as Yub Nub plays!!!FACT!!! youtu.be/BEi9WB18vwE

*disney star wars operate on nostalgia and nerd cred and should be left to die.

ftfy

>because you were a fucking child, i'm sure children who watch the force awakens thinks that's just as magical.

Only if those children are fucking retarded and love seeing a gorilla and some fivehead overbite fighting a giant rat. When I was 5 back in 83, I loved Jedi and the Ewoks but now at 39 I understand that they're shit while the first two movies still have power!!!FACT!!!

>I feel like the OT is genuinely wonderful and unique as an achievement in cinema.
They were almost copypasta of previous films and cereals like Flash Gordon. ANH was only successful because films like Chinatown, Apocalypse Now and Godfather ruled. ANH was a change of pace because it was hopeful and fun. This is why ESB was not looked at kindly when it was released. Overall, they're fun movies but not particularly good. Even the actors mentioned how cheesy the films were. FOX and Lucas thought the films would tank because of how terrible they thought they looked. It was great timing that made the franchise.

Why do you think Lucas made the SE? He genuinely was DEPRESSED with rubber masks and matte paintings and so were the actors.

I get what you're saying but to complain specifically of the later films as being "a merchandising empire" is ahistorical and just shows your naivete.

One of the things that made Star Wars such a major cultural event was not merely the film itself, but all its tie-in shit. The merchandisng around the original film, and by extension the OT, had never before been done in such a comprehensive way about any film property. They had action-figures/star wars guys ready to go, user. Memoribilia, toys, Darth Vader masks.

Star Wars invented modern movie tie-in merchandising. They're still great films (the OT, all three of them) but they were sold out on the shilling from the word Go.

The OT is shit, the prequels is where it all. The scale, the battles, the politics, choreography, all of this was superior in prequels.

I unironically thought this as a kid.
Still do. I'm 20.

Not really. The movies are only iconic because of marketing. They're really not all that important.

Your age explains your incorrect opinion. You are like a circumcized or abused child, being used to things in a certain way, never understanding (or even allowing yourself to understand) that things have been so much better for so many others.

>Your age explains your incorrect opinion.
Does it?
Will I change that much with time?
Keep in mind that when I first came to this hellhole in 2011 I went through my Plinkett phase where I was convinced that the PT was terrible. I already got over that.

Wait, do the (you)'s not working anymore?

>as an achievement in cinema

I dont care what becomes of the franchise, but feels good we got the last laugh and Disney is worse than if all three prequels were AotC-tier

yes they are overrated. if you look at the movies itself, theyre really not that good. its just in the 70s when they came out in theaters absolutely nothing had been done before in terms of their production quality and special effects scale and accessibility to the mass audience in a sci-fi film.

if you look at the prequels, they were actually comparable and in ways even better than the OT. its just the old star wars fans who got their minds blown back when they were kids have nostalgia googles.

now disney's trilogy. absolute copy paste of the OT because disney saw the negative reaction to the prequels which really was just nostalgia googles and said fuck it the safe bet to make profit is just copy the OT scene for scene and plotpoint for plotpoint. i fell asleep in the theaters.

rogue one was great though and it shows how taking risks with creating new stories can make kino.

AotC is the best prequel though

this is one of the few correct opinions on Sup Forums

You're probably too young to know this but a lot of critics hated the OT when it came out. Most sci-fi fans said the sci-fi aspects were unoriginal ,unrealistic and trite and many professional critics called it commercial childish garbage. It was widely seen as the capeshit of it's day.

ESB was also disliked on release if I remember correctly
