Book of Eli. I know a lot of people dislike it but I appreciate the character interactions and motivations. The scene with Eli bartering with the shop owner felt like an exchange that would really happen.

It's absolutely post-apocalyptic. There's just barely a semblance of social structure, but at its core it's about the human race slowly and painfully dying off, the wartorn slum Earth has become, and how people react to it.

But the Book of Eli doesn't show us religion, it shows us a bunch of people who want their hands on a copy of the Bible because in some weird series of events the most well-spread out piece of literature in the history of the world has disappeared from everywhere. In circumstances like that people wouldn't bother with a copy of the Bible, they'd make their own religion up as they went along. That and Eli being fucking Zatoichi kind of detracted from the quality of the movie.

What people don't get is that you don't need fallout to render anything physically uninhabitable. Simply destroying most industrial capability is enough to kill millions of people through dehydration, starvation and exposure. Just think about what would happen to any major population center if all running water and electricity was turned off for months and all means of mass transportation disabled.

The way the movie made it out to be, it seemed less like the authorities took away the bibles as much as such a massive, cataclismic event happened involving them that people willingly destroyed them. Sorta like the disco burnings in the 80's. No, it's not entirely realistic, but it serves the story well enough. And it's not implied that Eli has the only one either, as much as they're super rare. Bibles are the Shinys of books.

Just read the book of pic related, any one know if the 59 movie version is worthwhile? As a depiction of people waiting for the inevitable apocalypse I think it's a little unrealistic. Seems like the worst thing people do is drink a lot - I'd rather suspect more raping and murder. Still a very good book
