I'm not glad. I really think Whedon could have gotten 2 or even 3 good seasons out of Firefly. But then the combination of Fox being awful and Whedon being up his own ass would have created an unholy perfect storm and we would have gotten an additional 5 seasons of crap. Look at it this way:
>2 or 3 great seasons of firefly
>5+ bad seasons of firefly with the rare good episode here and there
or
>1 great season of firefly
>1 mediocre movie
To choose a more extreme example, if you like the Simpsons, would you prefer the real-life simpsons, where there were 8 or 9 good seasons followed by garbage, or would you have preferred it if the Simpsons was cancelled after season 2 (where it got really good) and we never got another simpsons episode?

Wasn't the movie a combination of what he wanted S2 and S3 to be about? I think it could have been good were we to get more. The only thing that disappointed me about Serenity was the huge change in lighting/color pallette. It's so much darker than the actual show, it almost feels like something else entirely.
