Even if Avatar made its money via 3D (just like TFA), you have to give the guy credit for Titanic's $600 million box office run in 1997 when ticket prices were around $4-5 in most places and muh 3D gimmicks weren't around.

And the theaters were EMPTY the weekend Titanic came out. Word of mouth women-to-women drove people into the theaters after that. Many seeing it more than two times.

It's how the world should be. He's the best director ever to have been born. He's also a perfect fit for this era. It's crazy how good he is at capturing mainstream appeal without it being schlock. He never gets pretentious like Nolan, idiotic like Snyder, indulgent like Malick or quippu like Whedon. He has all their best aspects combined, distilled and mixed to make perfect mainstream film.

Box office for the first weekend was mediocre but it went up because of good word of mouth. Same thing happened with Avatar which only opened with a 70 million dollar opening weekend and then went up.
