Because Russia is calling for an investigation as to whether Syria is actually behind the chemical attack, and generally supportive of Assad, meaning, if you're particularly paranoid, this looks like as good a way to start WWIII as any.

Yesterday, Trump condemned Assad and accused him of responsibility in the chemical attacks. It is possible that the US will be intervening in the Syrian conflict to remove him.

That could result in increased tension between the US and Russia & Iran.

Nuclear conflict is very unlikely. Unless OP lives in Syria, I would say that 72 hours is probably a couple powers of 10 short.

The Middle East is closer to Russia than you realize, so they try to maintain power there in the same way the US does for a lot of Central America. Russia really stepped up in 2013 when all of this hell was beginning to try and stabilize Syria, and has been working with Assad since, which is part of the reason they don't want to believe that he's responsible.

It's a possibility that the US will work with Russia to overthrow Assad in exchange for allowing Russia to handle the reconstruction of the country.

This would allow the US to do their "bomb everything, boots on the ground, tough on muzzies" routine to drum up PR while avoiding the post-Iraq quagmire.

In exchange, Russia would be free to build (or not build) their pipeline to Europe.
