Stephen Dillane, who appeared in four seasons of Game of Thrones as Stannis Baratheon, is coming clean and admitting that he wasn't really clear on what was happening while starring on the series. In fact, he had to rely on his co-star Liam Cunningham, who plays Ser Davos Seaworth, to help guide him through confusing scenes.
"Liam Cunningham is so passionate about the show. He invests in it in a way I think is quite moving, but it wasn't my experience," Dillane says in an interview with The Times. "I was entirely dependent on Liam to tell me what the scenes were about--I didn't know what I was doing until we'd finished filming and it was too late. The damage had been done. I thought no one would believe in me and I was rather disheartened by the end. I felt I'd built the castle on non-existent foundations."
Regardless of how Dillane feels about his portrayal, there's no taking away from the major role he played in building the Game of Thrones universe. That said, the actor still doesn't quite get it--even now. "I've flicked [the show] on [since leaving] to see if I could figure out what was going on, but I couldn't," he admits.
This has been his first interview on that role for like... 2 years now?
Dylan Hill
>Game of Thrones plot >too confusing Doesn't really help the stereotype that actors are clueless airheads who take themselves way too seriously.
Luis Hall
So what you're saying is there's a chance?
Ayden Anderson
I mean, it's possible. I'd never give out hope, my only question is why they'd bring him back for the last season.
Brandon Sullivan
He probably meant "clueless" in the sense of a) Whats Stannis's arc? b) Why are we doing this? c) Why should the audience care about what we're doing?
D&D don't know shit about writing, and it probably shows in the directions they give to the actors
Joshua Peterson
Redemption arc. He will arrive with Euron as a high-level mercenary in the Gold Company, only to recognize Jon Snow as the rightful king and work with him. Give him a dramatic death where he burns himself alive fighting walkers. Satisfying arc instead of just being truncated to fit more bad guys in
Brandon Edwards
Was it autism?
Joshua Gutierrez
What a fucking brainlet
Logan Davis
Literally perfect casting.
Asher Myers
>The Stannis arc is confusing See
Aaron Diaz
>doesn't care about stupid reddit show >brainlet really makes you think
Oliver Gomez
>hey guys, I just wanna say my character and his arc doesn't make a lot of sense >what a problematic fella, better kill his character off
Joseph Bennett
Maybe, but it sounds more to me like he's just an old man who cannot follow all these confusing fantasy names. My mother had trouble reading the Harry Potter novels for the same reason (though she liked the movies just fine).
Xavier Nguyen
Id be fucking confused too. Dabid hands you the script for an episode and hes got you burning shireen 4 no raisn. The only thing he says about it is "forgive me"
Isaiah Mitchell
so what you're telling me is.. Stannis is actually dead?
Ryan Ward
Stop whining about Reddit.
Grayson Perry
>defending the brainlet who found the reddit show for normies too hard to follow Found the second brainlet
Benjamin Ortiz
Stannis's arc is confusing in the sense that it's poorly written and pointless. It makes you wonder what D&D were trying to do
Brandon Perez
based stannis
Wyatt Russell
The only brainlet is you pal
Michael Hughes
hate to give them credit, but if he didn't know what was going on in the scenes that just means he was directed well and they got what they needed out of his acting. it's just a job after all
Lucas Sullivan
not and argument.
Samuel Martin
>not and argument
Gavin Green
Stannis was poorly written in the books too so it's certainly not D&D's fault. It baffled me that he became such a well liked character in the show.
Hunter Ross
>Stannis's arc is confusing Kill yourself right now
Christopher Martinez
HUH
Isaac Roberts
So it was Method Acting
Easton Young
They're meth actors, which means they do a lot of meth.
Joseph Gomez

Hunter Stewart
BLEACHED
Benjamin Rogers
hes obviously false flagging so his season 8 return will be a big surprise
Dylan Harris
Not an argument.
Carson Gomez
run out of your funny meme images?
Mason Perry
it's like arguing with a wall
Jaxon Reyes
Were you trying to argue?
Nolan Martin
It's weird because his death scene was the very definition of one of those "We're making it look like he died but cutting away from his death at the last second so that we can reveal later on that he didn't die" scenes. But it doesn't surprise me that this stupid show written by idiots who think they're more clever than they are would have a scene like that and do nothing with it.
Christian Edwards
isn't there a rule against avatarfagging
Lincoln Miller
Yes, just report rulebreaking posts.
Jason Campbell
there should be, both these fags should kill themselves
Tyler Bennett
I'm pretty sure this is all old news.
I recall there being an interview during season 2/3 where he mentions that D&D never told him anything about his scenes or character, and he had no idea what the story was or what his character was doing. It's pretty clear that D&D don't only hate Stannis, they simply didn't give a shit about his story from the beginning.
Aaron Ortiz
How many posts constitute avatarfagging so I know when to switch it up?
Henry Butler
He is a terrible and pointless character in the novels so this is one of the smartest things they have done.
Isaac Young
Also, do you like Jude Law?
Gavin Baker
probably didn't read the books probably only read the scenes he was actually in not that unusual for an actor desu
Dominic Baker
let me just use a report that the mod will surely understand since you cant specify the reason
Henry Diaz
Ok, fair enough. I am willing to open a dialogue on this issue in order to provide you with the respect that you, a commenter on an anonymous anime image board, deserve. Let's begin with a simple question: Did you find the Stannis arc confusing?
Alexander Gray
he did a good job with what he was given and his character only became shit when the writers decided to dump him
David Lewis
I've reported posts like that and seen them deleted quite quickly so the mods clearly understand, but if you're really that worried all you have to do is create a thread on /qa/. It's the board you use to provide context to reports.
Chase Campbell
In fact, refresh the thread.
Jayden Ramirez
The Young Pope was kino.
Camden Baker
So does Lawfag refer to Jude Law or is that just a coincidence?
Do you think he knows that people call him Stannis the Mannis?
Oliver Bennett
...
Jaxson Allen
/ourguy/ is magical
Anthony Mitchell
life imitates art
Ian Stewart
Stannis was one of the most beloved characters but the writers had no idea what to do with it so much like Cleganebowl IT FITS
Dominic Perez
It also fits Stannis' character. Stannis had no idea what was really going on, cluelessly being led along by his red witch.
Benjamin Perry
I wish there were more scenes like this showing his internal struggles. Stannis overall was very one dimensional and unlikeable, regardless of what the contrarians on here think.
I have only watched the first season of the show but Stannis is easily the most interesting character in the books.
Jeremiah Parker
pretty sure he's retarded. most people in this thread trying to make it out like it was the writers fault, but i remember when he did the iron bank scene and there was rumours that he had no idea what the green screen was and couldnt wrap his head around it. he's functionally retarded.
