The Room does actually portray romantic relationhips a lot better than the standard Hollywood flicks. It does this because it is the work of one man, not designed to cater to what audiences want.
Lisa is the typical woman, egocentric and hypergamic. Johny is the low-value nice guy, who thinks that women will love him if he loves them. This behavior makes Lisa lose respect for him, and so she looks around for a better alternative.
That is how the majority of all relationships(in the Western world) end up. Some people will deny this, and use some form of ad hominem to argue against it, but these people are just brainlets who've never thought seriously about anything in their life.

If you stand up for yourself and try to treat them as equals, they're going say it affects them "more" because you're "stable" or "neurotypical" and you don't know what it's like to be them, and they would prefer you acted as they did over being "indifferent." The last alternative is being a fucking asshole and beating the shit out of them and shutting them down so often that they don't even open their mouths to speak against you--at which point you're just a bully, you've lost all self-respect, and your relationship is just bullshit.
And as the other user said, it's always slow. It can take months or years before the manipulative side comes out. She'll tell you to get the fuck away from you, physically harm you to get you to do so, then cry when you come back an hour later because you dared to leave her alone and never cared about her to begin with.
