I think it's the best adaptation that Ive watched. It is its own retelling and made it work. The first season of Gokusen is also well done. The female mc nailed it.

As for anything from a battle, action etc series, I just don't like jap acting or presentation quality. Anime is already hammy and over exaggerated, trying to replicate it with actors (and not the original voices) always feels off. Any sort of action series they adapt turns out badly. From the horrible wardrobe (trying to match colours of outfits, has the outfit look like cheap cosplay tier material), shit CG that's a few years behind etc. Check out some stage play adaptions, they're hilarious (unintentionally from my perspective) as well.
