i'll use hearthstone to explain stuff because im sure everyone's most familiar with it
guardians or blockers are similar to the cards with taunt in hearthstone
but that's not the best mechanic
instead of HP
when you start you place the top 5 of your cards of your deck face down in front of you those are called shields
to win the game you must attack your enemy's shield
when you lose a shield you pick up that card
which means if your getting beaten early
you draw more cards
which give you a good chance of a come back
and then these shields could also be shield triggers casting spells for free and stuff
then it got even better with the second expansion set which let you evolve creatures

sounds pretty good, I dunno I dig card games but this was before I was really into them. just for reference I think hearthstone is fucking shit and pokemon tcg on gameboy is awesome since pokemon tcg is a surprisingly inherently fun game but EX cards are pure cancer.
