Waking up is more of a struggle than drowning.
Riley sees the morning light through the blinds, the ones he has shut as tight as possible, because the two-thirds of a handle of Jack Daniels he downed the night before have heightened his morning senses into a sensation of throbbing pain. The slits of light feel like stabs, each and every one of them.
He almost laughs at himself when he realizes "morning" is actually almost 3pm. He has been asleep for nearly 12 hours. Though almost everything hurts, he lets himself chuckle. That slight sense of self deprivation is all that seems to bring him joy.
With closed eyes in the shower he vomits down the drain, heavy gags and little to show for it. White lights dash behind closed eyelids, dancing on black canvas while he grips the wall and shower curtain and breathing deeply. He spits, rinses his mouth, and continues.
He doesn't want to but he checks Instagram. More people reminding him his wi-- ex-wife is now fucking a married man. Married man. He was once a married man. Remember that, Riley? the voice says. He shakes his head and looks down briefly. A sigh, a few deep breaths.
The pictures and screencaps of posts about him flow through his feed. They all remind him of his loss. He has nothing left now and will never have anyone like her again. The pain is like a constant punch to his gut, minute after minute, day after day. Only during his sleepless nights, his alcohol-induced relapse dreams, does he find peace.
