Its rare to see an actor care about the characters they play quite like Hamill does with luke and the joker.

Apperently he accepted after Ford and Fisher signed on it. And it was still under Lucas.
He sold it to Disney a few months later, so he had to make the movies without knowing at the time how the script owuld be or who would direct it.

This, and he still gave the best performance in the movie (well, him and Driver) despite the awful writing of his character. Just like Alec Guinness in a movie he hated (except that one was actually good).
It looks like he's going to ignite his lightsaber at 16 seconds.
