Mallick

What's his least pretentious film?

Voyage of Time, it's also his best

nah, i didnt like the whispering voice over.

I watched it with the Russian dub

The one where Portman gets her toes sucked by dubsguy
Foot worship is the purest, least pretentious form of love

If you think losing a brother to suicide and instilling your spiritual growth into your films is pretentious you gotta neck yourself

The New World.

It's hard to portray psychological truth in a way that any significant number of people can relate to enough to enjoy the experience. Malick's attempts are novel and incredibly valuable, even if you don't understand what he's trying to say.

Just watch Tarkovsky instead

I haven't seen any Tarkovsky, where should I start?

Stop this meme. Malick has nothing to do with Tarkovsky. Their ideologies aren't even similar.

That cuck porn he made with your father in it

Badlands

>tarko/v/sky

lol just lol

whats their differences?

It's less about ideology and more about presentation. Tarkovsky movies are as slow as Mallick's but he actually puts effort in fleshing out and developing the dialogue in order to make his movies at least somewhat cohesive and within the theme of his movies. Mallick just puts imagery that borders on random and "really activates the almonds"-tier dialogue that's only there for film critics and "intellectuals" to masturbate each other over how great they are for "understanding" the film. Mallick's like Lynch in that sense but at least Lynch is honest when it comes to making movies that make no sense and they're actually entertaining.

knight of cups, thin red line, and days of heaven are his really pretentious ones
song to song, badlands, and the new world are honest
to the wonder is kinda pretentious

What about Tree of Life?

Tree of life is pure kino

im saving it for last

Badlands. It's also his best.

You're an idiot. Malick was an inch away from getting a PhD in philosophy. You must think philosophy in general is pretentious intellectual masturbation like most plebs out there. Knight of Cups for instance takes excerpts from Plato's dialogues and references philosophers like Soren Kierkegaard and Heidegger. This is most likely projection but you also probably think philosophy is just a bunch of stoners sitting on couches debating the meaning of life.

kinda hard to say seeing as trying to live at all in an indifferent hostile universe is pretty fucking pretentious.

Plato in 2017 is pretentious

Plato is universal just like the bible. That's like saying the bible is pretentious because people still reference the bible in films. There's a universal truth both books convey and hence why they have become classics in the western cannon. But that's just scratching the surface. I'm not gonna get into a debate about why Plato is still important in the 21st century with a autistic Sup Forums troll.

>the bible isn't pretentious
stay in school

I'm not taking the bait ;)

why is there so much naive beauty in Mallick's films? I find it hard to believe in the worlds he creates for his movies.

>but he actually puts effort in fleshing out and developing the dialogue
*copies his dad's poems*
nothin personnel comrade

He still ended up with better fleshed out ideas than Mallick.

Why did he cut out Adrien Brody from the Thin Red Line?
