Storytime: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #3 & #4, Vol. 1

...

This one of my favorite Masters of the Universe cover artwork ever. Dave Wilkins captured the Fantasy element perefectly, with He-Man, the sea monsters and Mer-Man's figure rising from the deep.

To the issue. Adam and Teela continue their journey to discover what happened to them, and they are going to meet others from Skeletor's crew, and in this case Eternia's mighty Ocean Warlord, as they are trying to cross the Harmony Sea.

And look who came from the deep blue.
Some info for Mer-Man. He is one of the most powerful among Skeletor's allies. An ocean king and warlord, with superhuman strength, the power to controll the marine life, and he possess hydrokinetic abilities as we will see in this issue. He has basically both Aquaman's and Mera's powers, talking in superhero terms. But out of his element he becomes far more vulnerable, and since he is a king, he doesn't answer often to Skeletor's call, and he is the most independent from Skeletor's warriors. In fact this is basically his 2nd and practically last appearance in the MOTU comics pubblished from 2012-2017, with the exception of a small one in the He-Man/Thundercats crossover.
Mer-Man has also a very interesting background story as was told in the 2004's Icons of Evil mini series, and since this is Mer-Man's issue i will post it after storytimed this thread's 2 tales.

And of course Mer-Man can command the Kraken too.

And here you can see Mer-Man's hydrokinetic abilities, and his rule upon his element.

And this was the end of issue #3.

Mer-Man will not appear anymore, not even in the DC vs MOTU crossover, even if i may have an idea, where and with whom he was, lol.
We returne to him after storytime issue #4.

Continuing with issue #4. This is another great cover by Dave Wilkins.
Adam and Teela are still in Harmony Sea, after Mer-Man's attack, until finally they find a volcanic island. There they will meet more familiar faces, enemies like a certain beloved witch, and a certain "friend" in the same condition as they are.

That was a cliffhanger. What happened to Adam? What mystery is behind this story? We will find out the next days, when i will storytime the final two issues and the conclusion of the 1st Volume of the Masters of the Universe.

Now i will storytime Mer-Man's story from the 2004's Icons of Evil mini series.

This is Mer-Man's background story. It's somehow tragic. Mer-Man as was already mentioned is a King. But his kingdom suffered and payed for the consequences of his arrogance and his foolish pride. And the drammatic fate of his kingdom, lead him at the alliance with Skeletor, with the promise to help him to restore it, once Skelly will be ruler of Eternia.

Damn. Poor Aquarus. I liked him. A good leader.

A cruel surprise for Mer-Man. But being honest he deserved it. He defeated his heroic antagonist, and won the war, but his kingdom was destroyed. His people payed the price of his arrogance. Later Mer-Man will ally with Skeletor, so one day he could see his kingdom restored. And that's it for today. I hope that you enjoyed the MOTU ride. See you next time.

>Later Mer-Man will ally with Skeletor, so one day he could see his kingdom restored.

You know, I've always wondered why Mer-Man, a king in his own right, would allow himself to be a lacky for Skeletor instead of a stand-alone antagonist.

I guess that's as good a reason as any.

Mer-Man is actually the most independent of his warriors. Most of times Mer-Man works as an occasional and useful ally for Skeletor, especially since he controlls the oceans. But Mer-Man often doesn't partecipate at Skeletor's battles, especially when these taking place out of his element. It's Mer-Man's interest to restore his kingdom that drove him to ally himself to Skeletor, especially since Skeletor/Keldor presents himself as the rightful ruler of Eternia.

I must be misremembering then, because I recall Mer-Man mostly just being a mook in both the old and newer cartoon.

The Filmation cartoon "butchered" all of Skeletor's warriors and allies, by turning them to imbeciles. But Mer-Man when he was introduced first in the mini comics he was a force to deal with. He almost killed He-Man in several occasions. In the 2002 cartoon Mer-Man is turned to be a dangerous warlord, but mostly when he was in his element. Don't forget that his monstrous fish ate Duncan twice.

One pump for Mer-Man.

And one for Evil-Lyn!

Thanks again OP I can't wait to read more

Maybe at some point we can get some Moss man action?

You are welcome user. More Masters of the Unuverse coming soon.

Yes. Moss Man will have a big role. Especially in the third story arc, and the Eternity War. And of course in the DC vs MOTU crossover, in which you may guess with which DC character he will interact.

Prepare for Eternia's nature god, to make his big return.
