Have you ever thought that maybe it might be time to end a cartoon when one of the VAs is coughing up blood every time they have to do their character's voice?

Just a vague thought of mine...

They all died until they did

Doesn't Homer's VA get like a quarter million for every episode?

Imagine being able to buy a different house for every episode of the Simpsons.

Fox could'nt care less, so why should we.

They get paid $375,000 per episode.

wtf

Down from $500,000 per episode from 1999 to 2005.

why don't they just fire them and hire people who will do it for $1000 an episode

oh no.

or they could just quit.

On top of god knows what they make from syndication deals. It must be nice to be some of the richest people in the Television biz, and yet have almost complete anonymity.

>or they could just quit.
yes, quit from an acting job that pays 300k per episode for you to do funny voices

negative PR and controversy

I mean, it's not as if Boco and the three other people who still watch the Simpsons will care anyway.

A: Contract.. And B: Union.

Negative PR and controversy nothing. SAG-AFTRA would sue the living shit out of them and blacklist anyone from working for their company.

You think Julie Kavner should maybe use that hefty salary to pay for some throat surgery.

Didn't Mel Blanc eventually stop doing Yosemite Sam because the voice was too rough for him?

They "took a pay cut" to keep the show profitable.

Except it wasn't really a pay cut, since they got bigger royalty deals from syndication, DVD sales, streaming rights, etc, in return. But those don't come directly out of the show's budget, Fox was happy with it, even though in the long run the actors get much more money this way.

He basically phoned it in after 1965.

youtube.com/watch?v=p5Nopir7zlg

See this commercial from the 80s (jump to near the end). This was basically how all his characters in his later years--he lost most of his range. But he was 78 years old in this video and a huge chain smoker.

>all there is to life is money

you're a sad little man.

There's no reason to quit. After 28 years the actors are so good at this that they can do it without even trying.

Harry Shearer, who is famously critical of the show, records all his lines for each season by phone over the course of a week. They just send him the scripts for each production block and he does all his characters' lines without the other actors, then someone else pastes them into the episode in the right spots.

$375,000 an episode times twenty episodes per season is $7.5 million. If you could make that much money for one week's work and then fuck off for the rest of the year, you goddamn would.

>getting 13 million per season at its peak

dayum

No amount of money in the world would be worth turning my poor throat into hamburger meat after 30 years of doing a chainsaw voice like Marge's.

maybe. but then again maybe not.

Was there ever a reason why Marge sounded like no human woman I've ever heard?

He used to do it by phone. These days he uses pro recording software. He records all his lines and then sends the audio files to Fox, and then his job is done. But either way he hasn't actually recorded at the studio in like fifteen years (except for the movie.)

Family of chain-smokers.

And maybe because she was originally a rabbit.

This reminds me, I really wish Mark Hamill would stop doing the Joker for good because every voice he does now is Skips.

Isn't he done? He finally got to do the Killing Joke which was his stated end point.

Kavner claims she has a weird vocal nodule that allows her to make that voice.

>After 28 years the actors are so good at this that they can do it without even trying

Technically the Rolling Stones are so good at playing Jumping Jack Flash and Brown Sugar that they can do it without even trying, but I'd still take any of their concerts in the 1970s over recent ones.

>After 28 years the actors are so good at this that they can do it without even trying
This really isn't the case for Kavner though. Marge doesn't even sound like a human being anymore.

desu Shearer sounds kinda crappy now as well, although not as much as her.

US fans would be pissed

The movie was the last really great performance she gave.

I think Otto is the most harsh voice he does and he rarely appears on the show anyway.

He says Mr. Burns is also pretty throat straining.

I doubt there's anyone who can replace Julie Kavner. I've never heard any Marge impersonator that sounded remotely accurate.

I'm surprised they haven't gone the Arthur or Fairly OddParents route and downgraded to shitty Flash animation.

>Have you ever thought that maybe it might be time to end a cartoon when one of the VAs is coughing up blood every time they have to do their character's voice?

Your weakness disgusts Wally Burr.

who?

Did the voice direction for 80s Transformers. Was known for his brutal demands on the cast.

Wally Burr is basically THE reason that voice acting is locked into 4 hour recording blocks.

Made Frank Welker hack up blood.

During the recording for the Simpsons movie, Julie Kavner was made to do 50 takes for one scene and had a terribly sore throat at the end.

Given how she sounds now, you wonder if that didn't do some permanent damage.

>inb4 the screencap of Billy West ranting how John K wanted him to do this one scream 100x

latin american dub is the superior version anyway, learn some spanish you redneck inbreds.

it really isn't worse than the first season. it's always sounded throat cancerous.

Optimus Prime was puking blood during one of the bay movies.

thats insane

id do every voice for a ham sandwich and a hat

these people are such aspies. Kubrick put shelly duvall through hell over his bullshit.

Hitchcock was also a lunatic who abused his actors pretty hard.

Yea so did Welker hence they both modded their delivery for Transformers Prime.

really wasn't worth it. no one should suffer for their art.

Now think about this. Yeardly Smith is paid just as much to simply read the lines of a single character in her normal every day voice.

Video Game Voice Actors Strike is still still ongoing.

She used to do Lisa slightly differently than her normal voice, then she got lazy at some point and quit doing it.

Underrated Post.

Anybody notice that both Patty and Selma were smoking on yesterday's episode? I thought one of them quit and adopted a Chinese babby.

Oh Jesus no, don't. You'll summon him.

That's what happens when you're cast as the raspiest characters on the show and give them heavy prominence.

And I see it effecting nothing.

Not since they changed VAs. That'ts rhe reason i can't enjoy cartoons in spanish anyomore. Every fucking season every character changes voices and it's jarring as hell.

No one could tell the doodily difference.

I hope the rest of the cast spit on her if they ever run into her.

Apparently the writers slammed the door on her face when she came in one day to see what they were up to.

yikes

And they are the reason why voice acting is a niche thing in the US. Their fucking greed ruined that corner of the industry for everyone else.

The Simpsons cast other than Dan Castallaneta are all huge douchebags.

>Their fucking greed ruined that corner of the industry for everyone else.
Yeah, its not the fact that half the "talented" individuals in that part of the industry can never properly convey emotion in what they're reading...

not see what they were up to, but to tell them that she wants Lisa to be perfect in every way as usual. Writers cannot stand her.

And the rest of the salaried crew really hate the voice cast anyway.

Didn't even know it was a thing

>not see what they were up to, but to tell them that she wants Lisa to be perfect in every way as usual

She wants Lisa to be a wholesome, perfect role model character with a positive moral message or some shit like that.

The show has always been weird about Lisa. One episode she is the single voice of morality for the whole town. In another she is a kid right next to Bart that loves cartoon violence and loved kid based commercialism.

It's almost as if different writers have different ideas of how Lisa should be portrayed. Shock.

I noticed in the classic season episodes that John Swartzwelder always wrote Lisa like a kid while guys like Al Jean liked doing the emo Lisa you see in episodes like Lisa's Pony.

>And the rest of the salaried crew really hate the voice cast anyway.
Dan Castallaneta and Hank Azaria are cool though, I don't think anyone's ever said a bad word about them.

Might just be a tumor. Look at her nicotine-stained teeth in OP's pic...

My dad has yellow teeth and he's never smoked.

Listen to Kavner in Rhoda. That was more or less her natural voice in the beginning. Got raspier with age, of course.

Meh, she was never that attractive even in her 20s.

Marge sounded softer and closer to Kavner's natural voice up to about Season 4, but she started doing her progressively more harsh-sounding from Season 5 onward.

He's in JL Action

damn, how will they live

The pay cuts happened because Newscorp were in trouble in the mid-2000s due to some gross financial mismanagement. Dan Castallaneta and Harry Shearer were ok with accepting pay cuts but the rest of the cast objected. Fox threatened to replace them with cheap, non-union VAs and they gave in.

HUSBAND WHERE

COME HOME FOR SCARE

It appears that Laura Bailey got replaced as Chun-Li because of that.

And certain Injustice voice actors haven't been called back to do voices after it started.

>Hank Azaria are cool though
My friend recorded him doing some pick up lines while he was vacationing at Disneyworld with his family & said he was totally cool.

Kavner and Shearer won't perform their voices in public because they're dicks.

70s Kavner was a fucking hottie.

youtube.com/watch?v=6jcS909RNck

Cartwright and Azaria are cool as fuck, while Shearer is my favorite and does my favorite characters he is a dick.

Only of the main cast to have never done a DVD commentary.

Eh...
