it could be funnier as a joke without the ironic quality, within a larger episode, but wouldn't have fit in with the rest of the special skit episode and would have not had the pacing, which is key to this whole piece.
The song routine is necessary to become invested in the scene as its own thing rather than filler, which the out-of-context skits in the short films about Springfield episode clearly weree.
