When they encountered megagamer69 or whatever, I first thought that they were gonna realize that they are now stuck in a multiplayer game with a bunch of hostile people who will inevitably kill them at one point, and fuck knows what happens to them then.
Yeah, but that's how it worked in the episode. Obviously no-one would be stupid enough to sell a gadget that disables someone's control over their body to millions of people without some kind of panic button functionality (like if you feel like leaving the game, it automatically disconnects you, or if you get too dehydrated). My only guess would be that he disabled that functionality in the mod to make the game feel more realistic.

I think the darkest (and best) ending would have been them simply being trapped in his simulation and him getting away with it forever despite their best attempts to escape.

If strong AI ever becomes a thing it won't be used all over the place the application would actually probably be very limited since it doesn't actually improve a machines ability to preform most tasks.
