Because it's literally +1 card in your hand. Assuning that you have a Pot of Greed in your opening hand and the opponent doesn't, you essentially start the game with a full card more than them, and in a lightning-fast game like YGO, that can literally win a game on its own. Even in slow games it's unjustifiably broken because it also serves to subtract cards from your deck, thus lowering the potential randomization in a game where randomization is already excessively thin.

Oh no. Good Lord no. Games don't go beyond the third turn and it's more coinflippy than ever. Even eating a handtrap will only slow you down. Turns out that links are not only easier to bring out, they're generic enough to enable a lot of bullshit. And the ones that are archetype specific tend to be strong like this.
And it also turns out that Links play well with a lot of the 5ds mechanics.
Right now, the big generic links are Decode Talker, Topologic Bomber, Borreload Dragon, Tri-Gate Wizard, Proxy Dragon, Linkuriboh, Firewall Dragon, and Akashic Magician.
