Thanks for reminding me of the nightmares of my youth.
My family are Woodsmen, meaning that we are trained to bug innawoods for extremely long periods of time without supplies. Essentially Forest/Mountain Hermitry and Survivalism is a rite of passage for men in our family.
My Grandpa (God bless his soul) used to tell me stories when I was younger about things he had seen during his outings. This was one of them. Now personally as an adult, I either think it was a hallucination from hunger/thirst (because it happens when you are out for a month plus.) or it was a way to toughen me up before my first outing. Mostly because fear is absolutely integral when you go on an outing, you must face it and overcome it to become a man, or you fail before it and die like an animal.
My first outing was a three week session innawoods with a day's supply (because my father liked me) at 15. I did never see one of these creatures (mostly because I had found a berry patch near a creek so I was plenty hydrated most of the time) but the fears of these sort of creatures staring at me from the woods, waiting for me to die, stalking me, they are what inspired me to build an underground shelter.
