What about the original Tomb Raider movie?
They did, with Silent Hill.
When Guillermo del Toro directs a Metal Gear Solid movie.
Awful idea.
All games are for gameplay. Take it away and nothing is left. Not even games with a "good story (those don't exist, by the way). My favorite game ever is Pathologic, and a movie would never work. MGS would be absolutely horrendous as a film, even if 4 is basically a movie already (the key elements are still the little bits of gameplay, and the story is straight up retarded). Video gamers eat up stuff like Ocarina of Time, and IIRC it was recently voted as the greatest story in all of games. What does that tell you?
they cant its impossible to get a video game done right in a movie for a simple reason that is video games are inspired by movies, so how can movies do right a copy of themselves
Mortal Kombat was pretty good.
>Awful idea.
Shows how little you know. GDT and Kojima are good friends and GDT loves MGS.
Will video games ever get a film right? That is the real question.
Alien:Isolation is one I guess.
also video games get inspirations from different movies and film styles, turning a vg into a movie is like making a copy of a copy the result is always bad
How does that change anything? MGS still wouldn't work as a movie unless they changed literally everything AKA it becomes something completely unrelated.
It's more an awful idea because MGS works better as a video game.
Awful combination. He's more suited to something like The Legacy of Kain. Just imagine hearing this in the theater.

You'll be waiting for another 10 years at least with current directors/producers/screen writers.
Video game movies are in the same space comic book movies were in in the late 90s, Nothing good will be made until a hollywood starts representing the source material.
Movies can tell themselves.
Video games can't tell themselves. You have to sit there and play through 40 hours of a story before you get to the resolution and when its done you actually have a character to show for it. The character and your personal experience are what you walk away within a game. Take that away and you have a husk.
When you try to merge the video game with the film, you are immediately contradicting the magic of the game by stealing everything that gave it life.
what went wrong?
This, it's probably the only good one.
Prince of persia was okey
Only if they abandon the narrative of catering to normies who don't know the franchise. Which they won't.
While videogame plots are lackluster, they do posses some good worldbuilding and characters upon which you can construct a story.
Because it was basically a rip off of Enter the Dragon.
Honestly, Warcraft was better than I expected. The problem with video game movies is trying to cram 40+ hours of a story into a 2 hour movie for the masses. They're better suited for TV show adaption.
Tomb Raider wasn't that bad and I liked Angry Birds Movie
>40+ hours of a story
How long does it take you to read a book?
You had to expect an utter trainwreck then. Warcraft was nowhere near good.
>Angry Birds
Surprisingly okay
>people still think vidya stories are original and the reason isn't the super karate monkey death car issue.
Certainly not over 40 fucking hours. Do you have ADHD or something?
Raunchy Carnage-kino
I have two big problems with the Assassin’s Creed movie:
1. Abstergo being run by Templars is treated as a twist at the end, even though it’s painfully obvious to the point where you feel like you’re supposed to already know it from the beginning.
2. Aguilar doesn’t silently assassinate anybody. If I go watch a movie called “Assassin’s Creed”, I want to see a guy silently assassinating people by sneaking up behind them and shanking them with a tiny blade or something. That doesn’t happen once in the entire movie.
Video games have very thin stories and focus mainly on worldbuilding.
This rarely translates to film.
I never said it was good. It had potential.
Are you implying current comic book movies are good?
Some have heavier stories, but the problem is that the ones that do have heavier stories are pretty much just interactive movies already. “Life is Strange” is a good example of this.
However, if you can do capeshit movies the way Hollywood does them, there’s no reason you can’t adapt a video game that does nothing but world-building.
Most capeshit films don’t adapt any specific comic book story. They just take a character and their aesthetic and adapt that into a completely original story.
Games have stories and yes some of them have good ones. There is nothing preventing a quality live action movie or other adaptation of a video game other than lack of skill and motivation.
A common issue with adaptations is that they play fast and loose with the original material, but that's just a choice. The anime adaptation of Hyperdimension Neptunia for example is as accurate as it could possibly be down to even very small details, and its only shortcoming was ironically that they tried to incorporate too much of the story of the games without having enough episodes to do it with. No reason why, say, Max Payne couldn't have closely followed the first game, or why Doom couldn't stick to the aesthetics and setting of Doom 1/2 or 3.
Stories in video games don't really translate well, and the ones that would are basically just movies anyways so there isn't a point in making a movie out of them.
They translate as well as anything else. They are just stories.
>some of them have good ones
Which ones? Serious question.
>Multiple lives
>Solving puzzles & completing mission
>NPCs roaming & repeating same lines
>Each character with strength/weakness
>Redhead in skimpy outfit
Certified LITTY
>It had potential.
No. They picked a literal who for directing and told him to say he liked to play WoW, they picked literal whos for the characters and they fucked up the script for it to fit Metzen's nu-Craft philosophy.
Bioshock
Deus Ex
Nier
I have only one - nobody cares about present, people loved the games because you can shank templars and freerun on the rooftops, not to walk around science buildings and uncover le ebin ilerminaty conspiracy, so why is most of the movie exactly that? All it needs is 15-20 minutes, rest of the movie would be actual Assassining Creeding in Spain
Bioshock
System Shock 1-2
Star Wars KOTOR
Red Dead Redemption 2
Witcher WIld Hunt
Uncharted games
MGS games with grain of salt
Silent Hill 1-3
Deus Ex + Human Revolution
Max Payne 1-3
Spec Ops The Line
Mafia 1+2
>inb4 hurr durr it's not Citizen Kane
From a purely story-based perspective, the Abstergo stuff was always the most interesting part of the Assassin’s Creed games, so I can understand why they’d think they have to focus on that stuff. That story isn’t very good, but it’s the more interesting part of the story of any Assassin’s Creed game.
Of course, the story isn’t the most important aspect of the Assassin’s Creed games though, or most games for that matter. It’s the gameplay, and all of that is done in the Italian Rennaissance is the crusades or ancient Egypt or whenever the hell the game takes place.
Tomb Raider, Doom, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter. Even Hitman was OK.
Red Dead Redemption
pre EA Mass Effect
KOTOR
MGS 2 and 3
I would watch the shit out of an Oddworld movie if they ever made one.
>Spec Ops The Line
The story is a complete mess that fails at everything it tries to do, and this is one instance where the story wouldn't work outside of a game.
How would you guys do videogame movies?
I'd like to have a go at Hitman, myself.
>Movie makes some reference to Agent 47 at the beginning, and his current mission, aka assassinate other characters in the film
>Make the movie about these other characters, keep 47 entirely in the background changing disguises and rigging subtle traps
>The targets all demonstrate throughout the film that they deserve to be assassinated, or at least punished
>One by one they disappear, with clues that 47 is responsible (47 and target enter a room, only 47 ever leaves)
>By the time any of the targets catch on, it's too late, either 47 or one of his traps catches and kills them
>Film ends with 47 leaving with a perfect Silent Assassin rating, focus on him is minimal until the last few seconds
Kind of a bait-and-switch deal, having all these crime/spy drama scenes while just out of frame and focus some imposing, bald, albino is steadily getting closer.
the conspiracy stuff is pretty cool (Subject 16's leaks)
Also Prince of Persia was not a bad film, didn't take itself too seriously, like Tomb Raider.
People would hate it.
They would be the same people who hated Mad Max: Fury Road because it wasn’t focused enough of Max.
I recently played AC Syndicate after long pause (the last AC game I played was Brotherhood) and the present parts were infuriating me. The past could hold its own imo.
The Abstergo stuff is the worst part of the games, it's so contrived.
Outside of the Abstergo stuff, there literally is no story.
Didn't they plan to do one for a while?
I know that they did a film using the cutscenes from Abe's Exodus with additional footage.
fucking hell this is awful
and I like some of those games
Actually, the only game movie I'd like to see is Shadow of the Colossus. Yes, it'd be terrible, but I think the result would be very interesting if it were made in the style of Ashes of Time (especially Redux, actually).
I never saw Hitman, but the rest of those movies are bad. Street Fighter is the only one that transcends it’s own flaws because you can tell they made it purposely campy.
>go back in time
>cast Nathan Fillon as Nathan Drake in Uncharted movie
>shenanigans ensue
I don't follow the AC games, the only one I finished and own is the first one, but I would have much preferred some historical fiction, perhaps historical fiction with some magical realist elements.
There's plenty of story in AC2 and 3.
>Will Hollywood ever get a videogame movie right.
And it’s all told during the Abstergo scenes.
the first was average action movie and the reboot was pure shit, and I am not exaggerating, it was fucking audacity
>right
you mean shit? yeah they've nailed it on several occasions. "videogame-tier" is a term for a reason
totally without irony, I would fucking love a good KOTOR movie/series. You'd have to change a lot (galactic scavenger hunt is a shit plot, Malak's a cartoon villain) but the germ of a great story is there and tons of cinematic potential. Taris with the ritzy upper city in decline and seedy underworld with monsters at the lowest level, comfy-ass Dantooine, evil space Egypt with a Sith Academy infiltration plotline, spooky underwater parts from Manaan, star forge system and the ruins of the Rakata empire, the Jedi mindrape/Revan reveal aspects... Could be fucking awesome.
No it fucking isn't. You could literally take out the Abstergo scenes and would lose nothing narratively. If they had just made a series where you're an assassin hunting Templars over some conspiracy, it would have been infinitely better. Trying to make it that some Jews in the future are kidnapping people and putting them into the Matrix to find ancient alien weapons is fucking retarded.
This is a legit masterpiece of experimental filmmaking. If David Lynch or John Waters would've made it, or even Gus Van Sant as one of his "in between" movies, people would've gotten it and loved it. It's an almost Straub-Huilletian exercise in adaptive-filmmaking.
Then people don't get the point of Hitman.
Which, considering the Hitman movies we actually have, wouldn't be that much of a shock.
That gamers have a soft spot for nostalgia?
Listen retard, all games can work as movies, they just need to be ADAPTED.
Of course a MGS movie is possible, it would be a movie of snake sneaking around, learning about metal gear, fighting some bosses and eventually taking it out. It'd be like an old Arnold movie but with a more stealthy tactical feel.
The key is to rewrite the story so that there isn't 5 hours of killing grunts, which isn't all that difficult
Well new Jumanji is in a videogame
Directors just don't understand the source material so they never come out right, Prince of Persia is by far the best in terms of being a movie with Mortal Kombat being a fun watch. It's not all that easy to do anyway, you can't focus on pandering to fans of the game any more than you can focus on trying to make a movie that normal people will want to go see, you need to find the important elements from the game to expand on the bigscreen. In most cases you're trying to cut down a 40-60 hour experience into just under 2 hours and the rush through isn't all that enjoyable.
Some games are real fucking long my man.
Yeah, it wasn't horrible. But as a long-time fan of WoW lore, I knew they were doomed even trying to to cram so much story. Even WoW has trouble with it's own story. It's all over the place.
While just my terrible opinion, the only plot I can come up with is just introduce a handful of new extremely likable characters that are young and inexperienced. Allow them to travel and discover the world of Azeroth letting it unfold to them and the audience naturally. Maybe have them fresh out of mage/warrior/priest school as they struggle to survive in such a hostile world. Put some weight to it. Make even a murlock a problem to deal with. Then they can run into a major character or event and allow them to help out. Keeps the budget low and allows the studio to gauge the interest of the idea of a WoW movie.
Or just blow your wad of $$$ on a shit ton of characters, plot lines, effects, locations, etc. like the current one did.
This, fuck a game that assumes I'm some fucking redneck hillbilly wannabe captain america, I had no interest in another shit military shooter, but I hear this one is amazing and then I play it only to be told by the game that I'm a piece of shit for playing it.
Also it's a shitty shooter, but the sandy Dubai was cool
mortal kombats story was mostly a stupid ass info dump on the screen that isn't even really in the game to start with.
So then, you mean the idiots who don't matter?
I like it a lot, user, very creative, I'm a screenwriting bro but I promise I won't steal it
They did, it's just videogames are shit for manchildren
Doom works as unintentionally campy, and it has a PERFECT cgi first person sequence
also, I would dig a Fallout NV movie/series but that would be harder to adapt. The Courier is such a Video Game Protagonist, you'd have to come up with some other story to tell. The timeline is also weird, I understand that it's an alternate history but why did nobody develop microchips and why the WASPy '50s aesthetic (which is great btw) when the apocalypse happened in 2077? But with NCR, Rangers, Legion, Mr. House, the Families, Brotherhood of Steel, Followers of the Apocalypse, the Freeside crowd, all the other unique flavor, and evocative Mojave scenery, there's definitely some gold to be mined.
Mortal Kombat's story was literally lifted from Enter the Dragon. Boon just added some mystical shit so it wasn't a total ripoff.
>he hasn't seen Ace Attorney
Best vidya adaptation ever.
>Ocarina of Time, and IIRC it was recently voted as the greatest story in all of games
fire emblem radiant dawn was a great story based game although would be better as a series as had too many things going on
Am i a bad person for enjoying this?
I mean it wasnt perfect or anything but as a fan i didnt feel insulted by it like some other movies did MAX PAYNE
Also Street Fighter 2 animated
So play 2 and then brothergood, they're amazing.
If you loved them, jump to black flag, trust me user
>having Jews from the future find ancient alien weapons is retarded
OK, i laughed
Rewatched it recently and it captures the atmosphere of the original four games really well. The cg effects are alright and some practical effects and sets were surprisingly ambitious.
It's no masterpiece but it's an entertaining adventure flick.
Was it really that bad or did casuals just hate it because they cant into Warcraft lore and were expecting "le epic MMO references xDD"?
>not liking DOA
What are you, a fag or something?
>Bioshock
Fucking kids.
>it has a PERFECT cgi first person sequence
worst part of the movie for me, the gun was way too big, FoV too narrow (especially for Doom,) it just didn't work. i really enjoyed the hilariously shit dialog and the ridiculous fight at the end though. plus I always like to see Karl Urban
>this was all hand made and nothing was cgi
>actors literally fought in the room on platforms with giant spikes below and around them
>scorpion had a signed picture of Johnny cage
MK was elder kino tier.
>The targets all demonstrate throughout the film that they deserve to be assassinated, or at least punished
Those damn bad guys, am i right my fellow amereddits ?
I'm a casual and I thought it was "ok". In my opinion it was too much all over the place and lacked explanation of things and their relations to each other.
It doesn't matter because it's levels and characters help build the world, a MK movie literally needs to introduce the characters and then make them all fight to the death, that's it
Johnny Cage and Liu Kang finally fight at the end, would be cool
*tips fedora*
i found it entertaining and well made, everything looked like plastic tho.
Manchildren are not real, they are a bogeyman invented by conservatives.
>flat Kisumi
No, user, you are the fag
They should let David Lynch direct a Hotline Miami movie.
I honstly liked the assassians creed movie
The Sonic & Knuckles movie looks promising.
>unpacks his Nintendo Switch
A little of both. The orcs were the best part - Gul'dan was a good villain - but the human parts and Garona were awful. They should have done a LotR type history lesson about the orcs and drinking Mannoroth's blood and shit at the beginning of the movie instead of the new story they came up with. They cut out a cool scene with Grom too.
I remember watching Cradle of Life as a lil boy in the theater and having weird feelings for Jolie who was like almost my moms age
Man I creamed my shorts when I first saw that scene as a kid
I agree, the fight scene at the end is definitely a highlight
>I've got... ONE ROUND
i think it'd be better suited for Crank guys
