Please hire comic writers jesus.

No, just hire competent writers.

Is her name literally Rainbow? Was Snowflake taken?

Marvel, really really wants the young female reader market. I don't know why, just glancing at twitter and tumblr shows they're more cancerous than the comic reading base that already exists.

Cape comic book writers are shit though, anyone with any shred of talent goes on to write something original or moves onto writing real books.

wikipedia says all her other works where critical and commercial successes, and yea its all young adult fiction but its not as if the average comic book is any better than the average YA novel.

im willing to give her a chance

All the good ones are flocking to creator owned work, it's a smart move trying to get people who are already successful and just want to try writing superhero stuff

When are they going to hire a real writer?

Look YA writers have been failing for them going back to Tamora Pierce but this time it'll all work out. A fat probably hyper-liberal woman named Rainbow? That's an indicator of quality comic book writing!

That's what they said about Gabby Rivera

ahmed wrote middle eastern fantasy before being signed

>check the plot summaries of her previous works

>Fangirl: protag is a college- attending female fanfic writer with social anxiety disorder
>Attachment: guy falls in love with girl who's down on her love life luck after reading her email exchanges with a friend of her
>Landline: how a 39 year old female writer gets to talk with the past version of her boyfriend

I don't know if she's a good writer but I'm pretty sure I'm not her target audience.

Probably because regardless of their whining they've made some franchises into huge cash cows.

2 of them are adult, no young: Attachment and Landline

Why does Marvel purposely want to run itself into the ground. There's hundreds of comic writers to pull from. Female ones even.

hellooooo?

He's also a social justice weirdo.

Sounds like they're just trying to raid her fanbase.

Oh god no please. Her writing is shit.

>filename
ITT: Babies get triggered by Marvel hiring people who write real books.

>YA Novels
>Real Books

That means Marvel writers are even worse since they couldn't even make it in real books

doesn't sound white to me

MAKE MINE MARVEL

>book is called "Fangirl"
>inaugural book for the tumblr book club
>tumblr representative
I'm sure nothing bad will come from this.

LOL

I'm talking about real writers, not YA "writers".

This quote of Morrison's from Supergods I think fits here, sort of.
>Screenwriters, tried-and-tested storytellers from a more glamorous medium, were the only strangers admitted into the comics field during this time of withdrawal and consolidation. They were fawned over like good-looking girls who’d finally noticed us and who might attract other better-looking girls to our shabby party or invite us home to join theirs. Unsurprisingly they didn’t write comics quite as well or with the same freewheeling abandon as the people who did it for a living, and few lingered beyond their first few unimpressive checks. (To make good money in comics, it was necessary to write an awful lot of pages every month.) Joss Whedon, the creator of the long-running Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, stuck at it longer than most, with an emotive, extended run on Astonishing X-Men. Allan Heinberg’s short but effervescent burst on 2006’s nineteen-millionth Wonder Woman revamp was another rare exception, but the writer, who’d worked on the youth drama The O.C., couldn’t stand the poisonous atmosphere of comics fandom and made a swift, quiet exit after a promising start, leaving the field once more to the diehards.

It's about a socially anxious female Harry Potter fanfic writer. You'd have to work real hard for tumblr to not like it.

All the good comic writers are dead, retired, or just not working with Marvel.

Marvel should hire Pynchon.

At least she looks like a female and isn't fake in comparison to Gabbie

Is she a good writer?

I mean not all comic writers tend to be good either and they bring a lot of fanfiction ideas and always try to regress things to how they were when they were reading comics.

It's why we got shit like Gwen Stacy fanwanking, OMD, Marvel staff pushing their OCs over some of the established heroes, character assasination because a writer had a grudge with said particular character, etc....

I feel like book writers could make the move, their fandoms can be just as shitty and autistic as comic fandoms amd they write a lot anyway.

Gabby Rivera only had one book, at least this lady has a somewhat-respectable bibliography

It wasn't enough with the one from America Chavez?

Speaking of the chonga devil.

I'm not disagreeing but Marvel is definitely falling into the trap Morrison is talking about here. Like they hired Coates, made such a big deal about it and hoped that more literary writers would follow Coates if they thought they would be treated as celebrities and savior of the medium. It's why every time Marvel hires these writers they make such a big deal about it. But noneof them are going to stick with Marvel or even this medium. It's better to invest in writers who really want to write comics as you are trying to build your stable for next generation than the guys that are going to treat writing comics as a hobby.

The problem is that writing good books doesn't exactly translate into writing good comics. You can't just hand over a manuscript with descriptions of the scenes/panels with dialogue and be done with it (which I suspect the new recruits at Marvel do). It leaves a burden to the artist who has to do none more than half of the work by setting up everything.
This can lead to confusion and a bad flow between panels, pages and dialogue.

Ideally, a comicbook writer should at least a good grasp on panel layouts, and image composition. Hand over a very rough idea with characters, objects and dialogue bubbles in their place, either drawing it like a storyboard or being very specific.
Otherwise, they have to work closely with the artist who will have to first give their own thumbnails of how everything should be set up before drawing, they get feedback and then hand over another thumbnail and so on. (another reason why I think Marvel has a problem of delays with good artists and have to relay on bad but quick ones)

This is not the fault of the writers but of the editors, who should be the ones guiding new writers into knowing how to write comicbooks effectively.

>literally few novels
>all are YA/self serving tier
At least get someone like Peter Watts or China Mieville so people can actually get hyped about this shit.

Oh, I've read one book from this author(Fangirl). It probably just wasn't to my taste since it still got a lot of praise, but I found it a bit bland overall and thought the heroine was annoying. It basically felt like a 'relatable' slice-of-life story with some romance fluff and family drama but nothing drastic. Considering the other stuff Rowell's written, I'm surprised she's doing comics.

They should hand these fuckers Scott McCloud first time they visit the office.

They're almost literally getting gay fanfic writers to work for Marvel now.

>non-male: check
>fat: check
>possibly non-hetero. Must investigate further.

>They're almost literally getting gay fanfic writers to work for Marvel now.
Shit, so there's a chance I could get in the future?

How gay are your fan fics?

Don't hire anybody. Let the company go out of business and sell all their stock.

And?
They have porn artists

kinda wonder what kind of Hellcat comic would Tolstoi have written...

Well, Russian literature is said to be quite theatrical. Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment almost reads like a play.

That's mainly DC.

Fenimore Copper would have been the best capewriter

His Leatherstocking series already read like comics

user, no comic writer wants to work for Marvel. They've all run away to DC and Image.

So DC's star writer writes borderline gay bromances.

...

...

That's not a big deal, YA and comics tend to overlap.
It would be great if they hire someone who actually writes actual literature and not just genre fiction trash.

>actually writes actual literature
Coates?

>White people gib reparations to black people nao

Still trash

Mieville?

Did he actually write anything for Marlel?

Oh, I thought you just meant comics in general.

I'm talking about something more trascendental and less "muh black people".

Coates never wrote fiction until Black Panther.

This. If you're scouting from lit writers, they need to be looking for strong dialogue and inventive plots above all else and then give them a crash course on the way comics are made and how to write in that context.

Really I wish they recruited more from indie and web comics who are already proven.

>wanting more kate leths

very few webcomic writers turn out to be decent

The average cape is better than YA shit. YA is about the lowest form of literary tripe to ever exist. Add magic or a girl/fag/nu-male that cries and teen girls and college womenchildren will declare you a genius.

the hunger games series is better than most non-genre literature in the past 50 years and a lot better than any comic book

You're delusional.

when did 12 year old girls start posting in Sup Forums

who do you think keeps making those Nightwing threads every day?

Pics pls?

no marvel 1000 bad choices dont make a good one but keep trying

What kind?

Top fucking kys.

...

Yeah, since when were artists so fucking gay, anyhow?

is this some ann rice thing?

what the fuck is this comic

Yes.

It's about a Vampire loli.

YAssss queen slay!

Go back to Face/pol/

Claudia a shit.

To be fair, Liu has stuck around for a good while.

...

They should pair them up with an experienced comic writer so they can guide them initially.

to be fair, people don't usually chose their own names

>This weekend, Marvel returns to New York’s Javits Center for BookCon 2017, spotlighting how Marvel continues to branch out and bridge the divide between pop culture and book buyers, librarians, and book fans of all ages.

>This Thursday, June 1st, join novelists Jason Reynolds (Miles Morales: Spider-Man), R. L. Stine (Man-Thing), and Margaret Stohl (Mighty Captain Marvel) as they are joined by some of the biggest names from the House of Ideas – as well as some surprise Mighty Marvel Guests! These blockbuster creators will discuss bringing their prose skills to Marvel’s graphic fiction, bringing Marvel characters into the prose world, and the exciting universal appeal of Marvel’s new wave of graphic novels.

Funny how inspiration works. Its through shit we get this smugpire.

Marvel sees the diamond market as cancer and wants to jump ship.

I think it's more that they saw sales through bookstores were a growing trend and thought "You know what this means? We should branch out into prose."

No one with talent writes movies.

>fangirl
I hated that shit, so I don't expect anything good to come from this tbqh.

I like Suzanne Collins, but I never really cared about the hunger games.

Gregor the overlander though? That was my shit when I was young.

IIRC Shooter would give pages of wordless Kirby F4 and tell prospective writers to fill in the dialogue as a writing test. He'd also drill new hires in a crash course on comic writing and what was expected from a Marvel comic.

I haven't read any of her books, but if her twitter is any indication of her personality, lets hope she can keep her writing and her politics at least slightly separate. Especially if she's working on Runaways.

Please no more comics about gentrification and veiled black lives matter stories.

No, it would be fine if they did like DC and put professional writers from elsewhere into a program to learn how to write comics and then put them on books. It's just the direct hiring that can be a problem.

>give them a crash course on the way comics are made and how to write in that context.

Apparently most pro comics writers just turn in scripts written like prose or a screenplay. It ends up falling on the artist more than the writer to actually lay out the story

I think it safe to assume that Marvel has lost most of its good will towards most industry writers. That or its cheaper to hire people outside the industry because they don't know better.

>its cheaper to hire people outside the industry because they don't know better.

Like how Dynamite hires artists straight out of school because they'll sign shitty contracts.
