Physically, obviously, Jack couldn't open time portals. That was Aku's stupidity in activating the bit of him in her and assuming she wouldn't ever be able to override his control of it.
Spiritually, Jack CAN'T make a "for the greater good" choice and sacrifice people. Not even for strangers, since we frequently see that Jack won't sacrifice even the willing to accomplish his mission. It's just not right to him, he'd rather fail. Now, sacrifice the woman he loves and a bunch of people who explicitly came to save his life? That's never gonna happen. Ashi just doesn't work that way. Even when she flips sides she's a lot more ruthless and direct than Jack when the chips are down.
Yeah, Jack is too damn good for his own sake. That's been the main cause behind his failure the same way Aku has failed in so many numerous attempts to kill Jack just because he chose to be a douche at the worst time.
They're both their worst own enemies.
I don't think we can call it a failure though, since it's that stubborn, sometimes self-defeating goodness which ultimately gives people hope and a willingness to literally jump into the teeth of an invincible monster to help him.
Indeed, it was a victory of sorts. But sadly, and kind of begrudgingly being forced to concede a point to futurefags, the result would have been the same had Jack returned to the past when the monks gave him that chance. Only this time he wouldn't have had anyone to mourn after returning. Still, I know not throwing them under the bus was completely in character with Jack and that's why I've never had a problem with that decision.

I see this in general with characters the viewer 'knows.' The porn is not titillating, probably because once you empathize with a character or characters, it takes on a weirdly voyeuristic feel.
Here's what I don't get. Ashi disappeared after a time because Aku doesn't exist in the future, thus she would never be born. So why doesn't she also disappear from Jack's memories? And for that matter, how is Jack even in the past if Aku died in the past which is his present but he doesn't exist in the future which means Ashi doesn't exist which means she couldn't have used her Aku powers to send Jack and herself back to the past to kill Aku?

Jack was always "supposed" to be in the past, which is why he didn't age in the future. If I had to guess, he doesn't get grandfathered out of existence because it's ignored that he ever went to the future at all, that timeline simply never happened when he and Ashi closed it (and for that matter, the "him" that left right before he got back is just him, there's no loop).
Worth remembering that Samurai Jack is a setting with magic with literal, incarnate gods. Could be there's some deity or, say, group of three complete assholes who decide how to clean up time paradoxes.
