Books that should be movie/TV

It's no secret that hollywood is out of ideas for movies, what are some great stories from literature that you think should be adapted to the screen?

Hyperion - Dan Simmons: People always say these books can't be adapted, but a man can dream.

Forever War - Joe Haldeman: I truly can't believe that this one hasn't been made into a film already. Of all the stories on this list, this one needs the least amount of work to translate to the screen.

Snow Crash/Seven Eves/Cryptonomicon - Neal Stephenson: Pretty much anything by Neal Stephenson deserves an adaptation, but these 3 in particular have always struck me as the most cinematic in his oeuvre.

The Stars are Legion -Kameron Hurley: An interesting book I read last year, that I think would translate well. All female alien race, sentient planets, giant flesh monsters all sorts of visually striking stuff.

Wild Cards series - J.R.R Martin: OG martin fans know about Wild Cards. The origion story would make for a good movie, and there's plenty of interesting characters/events to build on.

My prediliction is towards schlocky sci-fi, so that's all I can really comment on, but I'm sure y'll have a couple of stories you've read that you'd like to see made into flicks.

classic literature

Tales of a Dying Earth
Gormanghast
Book of the New Sun - it can be done

Ilium is better.

Time's up.
Time to free the masses.
Time to reveal the truth.
A movie would reach more people.

>Hyperion
as long as they do all four books, i'm down

Ilium is good too, I think I'm biased for Hyperion because I read it when I was younger

Some of the more obscure Orsen Scott Card books would adapt well like A Planet called Treason, enchantment and the homecoming series.

Hell the sequels to Enders game would probably make for some good movies, but I doubt we'll ever see another OSC book adapted after the lukewarm reception it got.

Bump

No need

House Of Leaves done like a mixture of Adaptation and Naked Lunch, in that it’s not adapting the book at all. An idealistic young screenwriter and a bitter successful director going fucking berserk trying to adapt a book that the producers thought they could pawn off as a Paranormal Activity-esque movie. The writers begin noticing unnerving parallels to their own lives, and realize that it’s telling THEIR stories from different points in their lives (the screenwriter from his troubled and violent past, the director from a horrifying and mysterious future where he goes blind and stops caring.

I dunno. Point is it’s impossible to adapt correctly unless you’re adapting the feeling.

done right this could be better than game of thrones

>Wanting current "Ironic nerd geek chic culture" to touch any of your favourite books
Gormenghast already got a TV series and it was shit. I don't want current nerd culture going near it with a ten foot pole.

The Shrike is the best depiction of a remorseless, unstoppable killing machine in the history of American literature.

This one. made with Jim Henson Company puppets

The original Buck Rogers comics. The early ones. I don't mean the way later ones where everyone has pointy rocket ships.

In the first comics China controls the Earth, remnants of America still fight against them as guerillas and our secret weapon is a kind of antigrav pack that makes our troops able to jump extraordinary distances, fall from tall buildings and live, etc.

It's actually really cool, and the first era of the comics actually tried to be SCIENCE fiction. The writers ran a lot of their ideas past scientists of the day. For instance, Buck Rogers first rocketship is a TRACTOR rocket, like Robert Goddards first rockets, because that was thought to be cutting edge technology for the time.

There's even stuff like people bailing out of a stricken skyship wearing pressure suits, and as soon as they leave the ship their suits inflate like balloons because of the difference in air pressure. It was a very scientific comic for the time.

It's also still fun to read today. Would make a fantastic TV show.

Sounds interesting, you're right about only being able to port over the feeling

...

The Golden Compass was made in 2007. The trilogy should be finished, or rebooted.

Are the last two worth a read? I feel like everything wrapped up after 2.

Dying Earth and The Black Company could be kino.

i've been told the last two retcon some things and spoil them so it's best to leave off after the second

Even done wrong it would be better

Wasn't SyFy channel starting to produce a show or movie based on Hyperion? I remember reading something.

Anyway, I read the first book and it felt more interested in dumping a lot of worldbuilding on you rather than telling an interesting story so I lost all interest in reading the remaining books.
