This whole movie just felt like a big middle finger in my face. Not because of the diversity at all though tbqh. Maybe the new demographics they were aiming for were worth it. It just feels like a marketing department wrote this script, how every plot point feels like a commercial trying to sell us something instead of a film telling us a story. They've taken out the message of family and friendship and replaced it with agendas of all sorts. I will never watch anything Star Wars related again and I am done with these memes.

I took the ending with the kids to mean that even though this Rebellion has failed, it has done enough that the next generation will be inspired to take up arms.

Of course that ending only makes sense for an end of trilogy movie, to be followed by a trilogy set 20 years later. It makes no sense for a middle of trilogy movie that's going to be followed by one where they magically have more X-Wings again to blow up the New New New Death Star.

Sure, but the whole Rebellion got started up under the Empire. They got found eventually, but it was a plotworthy moment that happened on screen, after they had built up significant forces.

You know what Episode 9 is going to be about? Another rear-guard action, in which the big victory is Rey saving her little Jedi Academy and book collection from total annihilation, and running off to a safe space where she can raise the next generation.

Disney wants to make another Star Wars movie every year forever, and they want it to always be about Rebels vs. the oppressive Empire, which they see as the formula of the original trilogy. The Rebels can never defeat the Empire again, like they did in Return of The Jedi, because that's a happily-ever-after ending, which will make audiences say, "Well, that's over. No need for more movies."

The plan is "jam yesterday, jam tomorrow, never any jam today" forever, because hard times are the interesting middle of the story, and a story that never ends is all middle.

This is the DUMBEST part of Soy Wars; The FO goes from insurgency to masters of the Galaxy in the 5 seconds between TFA and TLJ. How did they manage that? The Resistance even blew up the fucking SK base.

It's completely nonsensical, and they wasted a good opportunity for a different dynamic in order to set things back to the Empire/Rebel dynamic. Hell, in the second half of the Last Jedi, they started calling them Rebels again.

The empire only fell because some former republic leaders were mad they lost power (sure they claim "muh idealism" but lets be real, had sheev made bail and mon major empire figures, the rebels alliance would have never have been founded) and then when they regained power, their own incompetence allowed the FO to destroy them.

The empire fell because it acted in a way that alienated those powerful figures. If Palpatine hadn't been a slavering, evil, fascist, Sith bastard, the empire would have lasted. It just wouldn't have been all that different from the republic except less corrupt.

The Resistance, as I understand, was a rogue faction of the New Republic that decided it wanted to fight the First Order, whom the NR apparently didn't care about, despite obviously being a threat. Now that the FO has taken over the NR, somehow, despite losing its big super weapon, the Resistance is now trying to defeat them completely.

It's nonsense and demonstrates a critical lack of big thinking. This is a galaxy wide story, and the heroes are like 20 people, and the people who took over the galaxy, in like 5 seconds, are a small contingent.

This is the mindset of the people both the empire and later the FO ousted from power. No army, not even the jedi like the OR had. They were destined to fail

The New Republic did have a fleet, it was mostly blown up when Starkiller Base destroyed the Hosnian system. They mention "allies in the Outer Rim" who are fighting the First Order, they're just not shown because this isn't what the story is about.

They thought they could just go back to the pre-empire republic, despite the lack of a millenia of peace that caused that situation.

Don't forget the OR also had the jedi around to help keep the peace. As far as I can tell, the NR made no attempt to help luke restart the jedi, despite people like mon motha being around for the OR and thus knowing how important the jedi were to it.

That was nicely shown in a scene when Leia gave message to all the allies and noone have shown or even replied

The First Order should have been a military coup, a faction of the New Republic Navy. They should have been using New Republic funds for "top secret projects".

The disaster at Luke's Jedi academy should have discredited the New Republic, and particularly Leia's faction in its government, so the galaxy was divided over who to rally behind. Luke should have been publicly blamed for the slaughter at the academy, and Leia accused of influencing senators with the Force, supported by the revelation that they were the children of Darth Vader. The Knights of Ren should have been presented (to the galactic population, in-setting) as the new and legitimate Jedi Order. Snoke should have been a holocron Ben happened across at an ancient Jedi site (and used when he was impatient with the pace of Luke's training), replaying a fallen Jedi's personal journal and training lectures (both pre-and-post fall), not a living person.

All of this would have made the setting and situation of the characters make sense.

There's actually a decent explanation for it but the problem is you have to trawl through Wookiepedia to find it. The planet is Illum, where the kyber crystals for the death star were mined. They used the excavated area as the foundation for a planetary superweapon. They spent decades building it.

Seriously the characterization of the first order is so off that they couldnt have made a less threatening antagonist if they tried. The first fucking scene in this movie has them loosing their best vessel to a single fighter and bomber. To re-establish that once again despite playing with bigger toys the first order is a joke. A literal butt of a joke that poses no threat whatsoever. Any miniscule amount of tension instantly vanishes when you realize they now have rey. We already know she can beat kylo, hell they were both onocked out and she managed to feminazi her way out of his burning spaceship before he could wake up. Disney managed to make the plot even less interestig than it already was, thats honestly amazing.
