do any new ambitious cartoonists draw heads that don't look like potatoes?
Noah Morales
it was REALLY because it was read as a "girl show"- and at the time the network it was pitched to did not want one. >calarts What? Do you have eyes? That looks like french indie animation more than anything. (and it's a good show- don't you worry)
Admit it- you just watched the Modifuckers, didn't you?
Thomas Rivera
the what?
Robert Collins
>i really don't get why this wasn't picked up
It had a female main character which wasn't considered marketable unlike the other show they greenlit at around that time, Fanboy and Chumchum.
I suspect that they probably weren't too fond of the dual character role either; Nickelodeon had already turned down Phineas and Ferb multiple times not all that long before then because the double stories in each episode made it "too complicated".
Jace Powell
> Fanboy and Chumchum. Lately I've been seeing people say it was a different show just about every time somebody mentions it. It was actually rejected in favor of Back at the Barnyard.
Caleb Watson
I am genuinely saddened that this got rejected Also Agent xero > felicity shadows
Because Nickelodeon rejected it for the cow show and the internet wouldn't catch wind of it until years after it had been abandoned?
Brayden King
That and it will always have the reputation of being known for porn. It's like seeing a porn actress in a children's show. Ain't gonna fly.
Luis Walker
Back to the Barnyard was 2007 which was well before The Modifyers came out; Adventure Time was what they passed on while giving the go-ahead to BttB.
Parker Foster
...
Benjamin Flores
Yes, years after it had been rejected and abandoned. Wasn't going to happen anyway.
Gabriel Reed
When you make a pilot for a network are you under contract to you'll hand over all rights to show and everything it?
Ethan Ross
No, because if that were true, Adventure Time would have never happened.
Luke Taylor
It depends on whatever contracts you sign. In this case, it clearly says that it all belongs to Viacom in this case. Meaning the creators couldn't do anything with it if they wanted, unless they convinced another company to buy it from them.
Juan King
well, because everyone feels the need to make this about why the thing didn't get picked up or porn, i'll just move it on
youtu.be/o7fR6gLQ2C8 >Constant Payne >Steampunk world >dropped b/c two towers kinda looked like WTC
Nathan Hill
I will never not be mad at this not getting picked up.
Cybersix briefly saved Canadian animation. By briefly I mean for a couples years before fucking off into obscurity.
Aaron Wright
I really fucking hate it when they add some good elements like Kitty Katswell(an appetizing cake) and then immediately splash a bucket of salt, meat and gravy all over it and tell us to enjoy our cake ruined by meat.
I think like this because I vehemently hated Cartoonnetwork and Nickledeon with their garbage comedy cartoons made for retards.
Whenever a more serious plot would come up they'd waste it with one of their cop-out endings like in PPG and Dexter's Lab. I hated the endings to the rowdyruff boys and the speed demon episode in ppg.
I think like this because back then I had Foxkids and Minimax with far far more sensible and serious cartoons to shape up my tastes, so I never got the stockholm syndrome hate/love relationship most people have for stuff like Ed Edd Eddy.
I think Kids Next Door was the only grotesque looking comedy children's cartoon which wasn't really comedy, they prioritized action, story, characters. It probably had to do with the fact it was a spy cartoon, so everyone had to act at least competent, even Cookie the comic relief.
holy shit, forgot about this they basically did it, but worse with regular show
Thomas Hill
You're a huge autist. How old are you?
Jace Cooper
It ripped off of Adventure Time
Zachary Adams
yes and totally not just because Tulip is adorable
Mason Perez
Xero done up as the pinup girl on the left (hair's still pink) starting to pull down her panties.
Gavin Peterson
Football head!
Chase Gonzalez
It was also because Nick had this retarded rule that a voice actor couldn't have a starring role in multiple shows at a time because this somehow would confuse children. In this case, Mae Whitman was busy playing Katara on Avatar.
This same rule actually lead to Invader Zim being shelved briefly because it was first pitched when Angry Beavers was still running.
Yep I remember this back in the day...the dude said it might have been 1 scene that killed it that looked like the twin towers.
Lincoln Gray
I wish there was still a way to watch it, like if some user had kept a rip.
Dominic Jackson
What's wrong with exec's brains that makes them so out of touch with what people would enjoy?
Matthew Brown
When you pitch an idea with any pre-made production/concept art, it's still yours and you can take it to any studio.
When the studio offers to buy the pitch, all property now belongs to them. You will go on to develop the idea and pilot episode until it comes time for them to make a decision if you've been approved for pilot production.
After the pilot is animated, they'll decide whether or not to green light the series. If not, you've just lost all those months/years worth of work and can't ever use those characters again. If so, you get a show.
There are rare instances where people have formulated contracts that allow them to retain creative rights of characters even after the pitch has been bought out by the studio which allows them to continue using the characters even if the network passes on the pilot. Sometimes though, that little clause with make or break a studio passing up your work if that is your demand.
William Mitchell
Forgot to mention that up until the pilot is approved for production/to be animated, the studio will often have semi regular meetings with the creator to see how progress is going and to determine whether or not the people in charge are still interested in the pitch. Sometimes it can be weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. You will do things like stand up in front of a small room of a couple of people, talk about characters, environments, pitch storyboards, pitch episode ideas, etc. It doesn't happen all at once, it's a slow process of showing them bits and pieces as you're developing it. Sometimes the network will send back revision notes and that's how you get things like SpongeBob going to Boating School ("He needs to be in a school!") or Marco having those school two friends that Darcy never uses.
If there's enough interest after months of pitching, then that's when you'll get approval. It very rarely is an instant one-day giant pitch process where someone has the entire cartoon thought out and ready to go.
Jason Ramirez
>If not, you've just lost all those months/years worth of work and can't ever use those characters again
That's fucking dumb
Michael Sanders
It's a risk, but it isn't like the creator got absolutely nothing in return. The studio does buy the pitch initially, it is technically a sale. Creators are also quite capable of reading the paperwork of what it means to sell the idea and can back out and keep the characters if they don't want a studio to have control of it.
Chase Edwards
Thanks user, was an interesting read
Angel Jenkins
they are between 60 and 80 years old, were born into money, grew up sheltered, studied business, never had any hobbies but drugs and whores, and feel more pride if they succeed at selling a godawful product for a profit than they do if they sell a good product for slightly less profit
or to put it another way, they've gotten everything they want their whole life
Aaron White
I wish it got picked up. Is have more mousepads to make.
Connor Jackson
That thread was amazing. I envy that guy.
Liam Jenkins
How is it an Adventure Time ripoff?
Luis Anderson
...
Jason Brooks
the social being in me cringes at this but i really want these
Lincoln Hill
A friend saw this pic a while ago. He knows I like that character a lot and asked me if this was mine. It's not but after seeing it I sure wish it was.
Kayden Butler
I would be willing to make a mouse pad like those, only if I knew how to.
Bentley Foster
That episode and the Infinity Train pilot only have surface level similarities.
Aiden Harris
Honestly that and Forever 12 where both complete shit. Zero plot, zero hook and both lead by generic nerd so strong red head.
Samuel Thompson
Thought it was because a lead designer/animator or whatever was trying to start a union
Grayson Flores
not usually a goth person but shadows is way better
Dominic Smith
Lacey's cool and all, but there's just so many fucking cartoon goth girls that her true identity as a 60s mod fashion cartoon girl stands out much more as a distinctive character.
Brayden Parker
Seconding this. Does anyone here have a download?
Benjamin Hall
They picked Mighty B over it and they didn't want any any more "girly" shows with female protags as they did already.
Thomas Cruz
but xero reminds me too much of austin powers and I can't fap to that. plus the hair is just too long and the sideburns remind me of that guy from xiolin showdown
Joseph Morris
Nick is retarded. As long as they, Disney and Cartoon Network run the shows there will never be an improvement in quality.
i`ll defend this pilot till the day i die. i know music-based cartoons tend to end poorly, but i still have hope
Leo Moore
Frankly I think the whole thing went to shit as soon as Xero showed up.
Honestly Im not even sure what the point is then. There is no way they can keep that premise going,.
Hunter Ross
I'm with you user, it's a damn good short. Think you're hope is unjustified bough, it's clearly a product of its time and all the crew have well gone on to work on different things.
Ian Moore
The premise of a secret agent stopping bizarre rogues using a variety of disguises and personas with a transforming? Because it's pretty much perfect for a weekly formula.
I sort of like this one, even if the titular character's speech patterns get grating even after 6 minutes
Jacob Sanchez
>Not liking ridiculously long hair
Hudson Sanchez
you know damn well she would have kept the one and we'd just get a series of status quo resets as to how Shadows isn't busted
Noah Johnson
The thing about those "Random Cartoons" pilots from 2008 or so is that most of them were terrible, some were okay, and a few were pretty good.
Charles Evans
> she would have kept the one
Easton Davis
You know, you can just admit you only liked it for the cute girl.
Dominic Bailey
Nope, it was because one of their blimp things nearly did a 9/11.
Daniel Gutierrez
Inifinity train is overrated. The main charecter is a bitch and the only reason it got popular is because people lath on to shows with mysteries regardless of quality.
Jaxon Rivera
See: Gravity Falls
Levi White
MINA AND THE MOTHERFUCKING COUNT
Adam Johnson
I actually remember seeing a promo for this on Disney Channel eons ago...
Nicholas Perez
I just watched the pilot. This absolutely should have gotten a show.
Mason Jenkins
I've got a copy. Give me a bit and I'll upload it to MEGA.
