The backstory of how we got to TFA from ROTJ is idiotic. The lengths they went to to justify rehashing ANH are ridiculous, and of course none of it was explained on screen. Have to buy a book for that. The whole sequel trilogy is built on a foundation of shit, and TLJ made everything worse. As a standalone movie, it was decently entertaining, though far from kino. As part of a franchise, it was horrible.

It was a bad movie on released and the sequel TLJ that follows it is so bad that TLJ retroactively made TFA even worse. Even TPM and Clone Wars were actually slightly improved despite being bad movie because the spin off and RotS develops and wrap up the story quite well.

No. TFA is now of even lese worth than what little it had as a soft remake of ANH, because TLJ adressed every single mystery it posed besides that as pic related. So they'll either have to work with nothing for IX or retcon the shit out of VIII. Prepare for a From A Certain Point Of View scene of gutherzige unheard scale and magnitude. Because the ST always has to be biggererer than the OT. Even when it makes itself small and confined.
