What did the note say?

I’m moving in with Tyrone you rapist #MeToo

Protip: it doesn't matter.

Not even the director knows, he just told Rooney to write whatever she feels right to the character.

2nd best film of the year, really amazing stuff

Watched this movie last night, loved it. Did anyone else see 'The Gay Science' by Nietzsche on the bookshelf? I thought the movie was definitely an exploration of the eternal recurrence and examining coming to terms with our own mortality.

Do you think it was Casey under that sheet the whole time?

That was one of the dumbest movies I’ve ever seen. Rooney actually eats pie for five minutes on screen. I felt robbed even though I watched it ona plane.

Can I get a quick rundown on how this is liberal propaganda? I'm sure it is

I loved everything except the party monologue scene, that was extremely cheesy.
Song listening scene is the best one, superb editing choices.

There's a scene where Natives kill a family of whites for attempting to build a house, maybe that's a comment about colonialism?

the sheet is a commentary on white supremacist groups

So did they build an entire major city where his house used to be?

I hated it at first for being pretentious hipster garbage, the pie eating scene was its lowest point. It got good when the wife left because that's when the film began to illicit an emotional response. The best scene was when he sperged out and haunted the family, it was the most human moment of the movie. The party scene was bizarre, the hipster guy tried too hard to be profound and failed, but the movie acted like he didn't.

Worst soy horror in a while, worse than the witch

>the hipster guy tried too hard to be profound and failed

I feel this way about the whole movie

What exactly is wrong with the pie-eating scene? It was incredibly raw, the opposite of emotional pandering. It felt like an unedited Malick scene, before he adds over the poetic voice over and cuts it up to a few seconds.
>The party scene was bizarre, the hipster guy tried too hard to be profound and failed, but the movie acted like he didn't
I'm pretty sure that was the point. He was a character, a person, and not some sort of statement meant for the audience. He too will end up like everyone else and so in the end his nihilist worldview and realizations will will amount to nothing. Watch a Jarmusch film, because the character was straight from one

8/10

Yep noticed the book too. Thought its a coincidence at first but then came the speech

Editing choices yeah. Song choices not so much

Does Casey and his output of depression kino make him another one of /ourautisticguys/ like the Goose?

not a horror movie, dumbass

>tfw everything you know is dead and gone and the world is strange and different
>the comforts of the life you had are gone, forgotten by time and will never come again

reminds me of the first time I read Speaker for the Dead

exactly, soy horror

>natives kill whites
>theyre calling for white genocide
>whites kill natives
>its liberal "white people are evil" propaganda
They cant win either way

I think you're confused because there's a ghost in the movie

It's stuck with me, but I can't really pinpoint why.

I'm not really sure what our main character learned in the end, except that his entire afterlife took place just so he could have closure with his wife. Going back in time really didn't do anything for him except teach him that life is fleeting and ultimately meaningless.

But the silent atmosphere lent itself to a lot of reflection on the life and death themes and that's stayed on my mind

>What is a ghost? A tragedy condemned to repeat itself time and again? An instant of pain, perhaps. Something dead which still seems to be alive. An emotion suspended in time. Like a blurred photograph. Like an insect trapped in amber.

reminded me of how the ghost in Devils Backbone worked

my thought on the pie scene was holy shit I hope they got that on the first take

I quite liked this film. The only parts I didn't like were the few long takes in the first half of the film including the pie eating scene which were all completely pointless. Muh grief, muh acting.

>Do you think it was Casey under that sheet the whole time?

Mostly, but from what I read the director and I think the dp also were under the sheet sometimes

BORING

the art director stood in occasionally because he had the same build

>budget $100,000
>house was free to shoot in because it really was going to get torn down anyway

Of all people Mike Stoklasa made a good point about it: it helps to show the passage of time from ghost perspective. First it's slow, then it speeds up until entire decades or centuries go by in a flash.

When ghost went back in time I assumed all those long takes at the start would be explained as "this is ghost's POV, and the scene lingers because we're seeing it as he sees it for the first time". And they didn't explicitly spelled that out but it might have been the case

"Boring" is not a valid argument, it only says what your mood was while watching the film.
Same as saying "it was fun", that does not indicate anything about the actual quality of the film whatsoever.

not scary or anything but this was pretty startling

It works because you're so focused on him finally getting to that damn piece of paper on that part of the frame

If any of you like this film and still haven't seen any Tarkovsky film, please go watch some Tarkovsky, you'll absolutely love it.

...

>those rounded corners
>not even a lens effect, but done in post
This is how you know the film is trash. There's nothing wrong with the aspect ratio, but adding the effects of an old CRT doesn't contribute to a feeling of "claustrophobia" for the audience like the director claims. It just ends up being annoying. And I'd look past it if it were done during shooting, with a physical mounted lens effect. Because then it would show the director had vision and conviction in his imagery, that this was exactly how he wanted it to look. But it's done in post, because the director didn't have the balls to shoot all his footage to such effect, and then like some pretentious twerp he decided to add this cropping after the fact.

it did remind me of Stalker in terms of tone/pacing

>the hipster guy tried too hard to be profound and failed
Agreed, but I still liked it aside from this.

I think it would've landed better if his speech was shorter

I love that shot

He never said the vignette look was intended for a "claustrophobia" effect, he used the vignetted edges to evoke feelings of an old photograph, or a slide projector, or a slide show, further supporting the narrative of the passage of time and letting go of sentimentality.

I'll bite, what's the first?

incredible sequence

Most of the stuff he said sounded like things I'd have said in early high school, but you're probably right. If he had made a short sweet statement, instead of a long pseudo intellectual ramble, it would have been better. Also if he didn't look like a complete faggot I wanted to beat up.

random connection but I loved the ghost's lack of expression the way I love Johann Kraus from Hellboy (not the comedic version from the movie)

>I'm waiting for someone
>Who?
>I don't remember

definitely had a high school stoner vibe

>I don't think they're coming

Where do I get that ghost sheet? It seemed pretty damn comfy

It conveyed a similar feeling of emptiness through it's atmosphere

My bad, he said that in regards to the aspect ratio. But that doesn't make sense at all, especially when you consider many an older film re-released on bluray is in fact cropped top-and-bottom to match 16:9 or similar. I'd associate modern aspect ratios to with "boxiness" over taller framing.
But I don't see the effect as a worthwhile addition. You can see aliasing on the edges, which distracts from a regular framing. In my mind, a practical lens effect while shooting would allow light to bend around the corners and look far better.

BORING

They could've got away with the length if it wasn't so on the nose.

>but adding the effects of an old CRT
hurrdurr

"Boring" is not a valid argument, it only says what your mood was while watching the film.
Same as saying "it was fun", that does not indicate anything about the actual quality of the film whatsoever.

I assumed they did it because it makes it feel like a silent film, which this basically was

You shouldn't like movies for that reason but you're basically arguing against giving people recommendations

Where was i supposed to be scared?

You brainlet, just because it had a ghost in it doesn't mean it was supposed to be scary.

>That was the first time Rooney had ever eaten any pie, and it wasn't even good pie.

>What did the note say?

It said "boo!"

You're supposed to be scared of the prospect of your house becoming your inescapable cuck shed when your wife brings home another man

>had to do 2 takes because because the first one rooney became nauseous and burped loudly
>too full for the day, so second take had to be the next day
Why are thin women like Rooney so bad at eating?

They don't eat. That's how they stay thin

Apparently the pie scene was Roon Roon's first time eating pie. She hated it!

Should have been a bowl of eggs instead.
