Why does it have to be either. A soldier can just make an offhand comment like how the salt is eroding their engines or something. Or show don't don't. Show people in non winter clothing and sweating visibly. Show how the ground doesn't fluff like snow.

This WAS nostalgia pandering. It would have been better if it was anything else. The reason that scene is so hilarious is that it's such a transparent attempt at saying "see, it's superficially different from in ESB, so it's not technically a carbon copy of that exact same scenario."
