>4 or 5 different directors >release date before the script and director or even Ripley was set >planet made out of wood mediaeval society >Sigourney weaver demands to die >kill all characters from previous film >need religious theme now >assistants are studio spies >producers fighting >budget increases decreases increases decreases >exorcism on an alien >can we make them convicts? I like convicts! >let's go with a music video director for the studios most important movie ever because maybe one day he will become good >random shit: one of the scripts was literally Prometheus >Cameron's version was the best, they go back to earth and live as a family...
What the fuck happened? how nuts must the story be about the last jedi
Evan Russell
>assistants are studio spies
Elaborate on this one?
Gavin Anderson
The 3rd or was it 4th director when working on it had assistants. It then turned out they were reporting on him every day back to the studio one in mornings other in the evening.
Then it gets muddy as to what happened. People fired, romantic relations rumored and studio then changing demands for the movie after production had already begun.
Brandon Gray
Fucking neat. I love hearing about that kind of shit.
And that's just one of the times it was found out. Imagine how many movies get made every year where people in low level positions were acting as informants.
Sebastian Roberts
Also it didn't get easier once fincher had begun working on it. Script still not done and on one rewrite it was such a disaster they shut down work for 3 months because everyone walked off the set in protest refusing to do that version.
Ryder Hill
must be great, working on a kino (yes Alien^3 is kino) during the day and being a corporate spy at night
Christopher Martinez
No doubt. Hence my spoiler for instance. Would love to see the true story on that production.
Alien 3 is quite special however. The story behind the movie is amazing.
Robert Long
And despite that it’s still better than Covenant.
Isaiah Rodriguez
What really makes no sense is how they made so many decisions based on cheapness and still wound up making a pretty expensive movie (for the time). So they didn't really save that much money but still skimped in all the wrong places and fucked up what should have been a sure thing. If you're going to spend a fortune either way, spend enough to do it right.
Also, Weaver deserves some blame for not wanting to use guns any more and allegedly greasing the skids for Hicks to be written out because she and Beihn didn't get along or something.
Jaxon Hill
At one point on alien 3 the entire production spent an entire summer just making Ripleys newts and bishops dead bodies and nothing else. Because they figured everything else would be a waste of time since subject to changes in script at any moment. So just 3 props dead corpses.
Xavier Butler
Lol
So yeah she demanded to be killed off. She also says at least that she felt Ripley was a solitary person that should be alone. Could be she didn't like the guy who knows but he was pissed off in fact he thought the movie was a sure thing for him then his agents calls and tell him he's dead now lol because at first he wasn't.
And yes they kept changing budgets and willingness to invest back and forth. Still the entire time they considered it their most important picture of all that was gonna save keep the studio a success. Then they skimp out lol different executives had different agendas and also basically messed with each other, none of the producers agreed on anything.
At one point the movie was gonna have a male action hero and no Ripley because according to data despite her no women went to see the movies so they figured why not just drop catering to women and instead go with a famous male movie star.
Jeremiah Green
wtf. I was literally just about to watch this after I showered.
think I will like it?
Angel Moore
On hicks by the way. They did make a dummy body of his too with his chest exploded as if an alien had come out. Which was script at one point that the alien that came with the ship was inside him.
So he calls up his agents mad like >it is one thing I'm not in this movie but they can't do that can they? And agent replied >no way that's your likeness So the agent called the studio and said they will sue if they use this corpse and likeness.
Studio said well, what if we pay him a some cash to use his dummy corpse and he said he didn't care how much money they pay that alien is not coming out of my chest. With a little regret because money is always nice.
Then 2 months later they call again and say they wanna use his photo in the movie. Then he said they can pay him and they did. He got same amount of money for that one frame picture in the movie, less than sec in it than he got for doing aliens. Supposedly it was a mean negotiation and fincher hated him afterwards.
William Martinez
The behind the scenes you will.
Wyatt Parker
Bump find this interesting.
Hudson Flores
It was good up until Dance died. Then it went completely shit.
Nathan Torres
Now fincher didn't have it much easier. As soon as he started they started changing scripts back and forth. Started to fire producers left and right and would then give them an amount set of how much money it has to cost. They would tell the studio that can't be done, then later get a new amount. They would try and explain if such a low amount what will end up happening is we go over budget way way above budget by a huge amount. They ignored them and of course it went way over budget.
Fincher never had a finished script or storyboards.
Jackson Powell
What little interest I had did go away by that moment. You have a point.
Here is a quote from the man himself on Alien 3 and its issues
>Fincher had the studio on his back the whole time phoning him at all hours of the day and night – not taking into account the time change.
>in his opinion, Vincent Ward’s initial script was "really spooky" - before it was ultimately changed to make Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley more prominent.
>But what really made Alien 3 so woeful? Well, simply put, it was poor planning. The film never should have gone into production because its script hadn’t even been completed. They then hired a first-time filmmaker to try and oversee the mess, and despite the fact that David Fincher has now blossomed into the quintessential darkly-populist director of the modern era, it was just too much for him back then. The studio then constantly tried to interfere, overruled any decisions that Fincher tried to make, and ultimately oversaw most of the production themselves. In conclusion, it’s lucky that the film turned out to be below average, as it probably should have been a total catastrophe instead.
Carter Wright
If you have any taste, yes.
Gabriel Scott
At one point they lost a day of shooting and had to shut down because they fincher didn't like the accent one of the actors was doing for his scene. Not doing rehearsals was obviously a mistake but then they had to use the footage anyway because they couldn't afford to reshoot so the guy has 2 different accents in the movie. It was the mad guy who freed the alien.
Xavier Johnson
that was from the assembly cut, right? didn't the trap not work in the original or am i dumb?
Jackson Evans
No I think you are right. But I watched like 3 cuts now so...
Carson Flores
They hired a new set designer to do new sets and when he gets to work he sees they have got no money left so he has to use existing sets anyway. Brilliant production.
Justin Rogers
>spaceship in the ocean >bring the oxes and let's get this out of there Fuck that future. Also the special effects the stop motion for the alien all bad so very bad.
Lincoln Thomas
The blood was good though.
As the producers would say about fincher. His complete devotion to the color of blood was something else. He would spend hours out of days shooting perfecting the color of blood in the scenes with the alien.
Nathan Robinson
so'kay, ac has some neat stuff, rapey inmate heroing himself into the trap to lure the alien was a good scene too
John Perry
Of course they also had just bad luck.
Like the cinematographer Jordan got sick after a week and had to leave. Had parkinsons and the big sets and small spaces ladders everywhere made it impossible. One of the camera men had to take over the work and they had friction between him and fincher going forward.
Jace Diaz
Watch DC only (actually called assembly cut or whatever), theatrical is a hot mess.
Owen Ortiz
Yeah. Also the cow was a better choice and removing the alien in last scene which was over the top. If same cut.
Lincoln Howard
They are all a hot mess in the 3rd act though.
Camden Garcia
I remember having an alright time with the extended cut, regular one I can't remember much beyond not being impressed.
Jeremiah Rivera
>fincher quote >while on set
>oh, great. We're being held captive by a moron talking about his crew
Most of the crew didn't like him. Several people quit on the first day working with him because they found him to be unpleasant.
Matthew Watson
Holy shit they really had no idea what the fuck they were doing with this movie.
Cameron Wood
Remember character 85? So the writer producer and line producer thought he was suppose to be a funny guy and didn't like Finchers dailies on him. So they asked fincher why isn't he funny. Fincher said he was a middle class guy the hero of the movie, they were like this guy? Not this guy, he is the dumbest guy of the movie. So they rewrote the script to make him 85 nicknamed for his IQ and make sure fincher knew he wasn't the hero but an idiot. Now this is well into production of the movie and the script still isn't finished it never really is.
Jeremiah Perry
No kidding lol
Anthony Bennett
The character 85 was also suppose to die earlier in the movie according to the script. But fincher wanted him to die at the end. The producer and the current writer then calls the studio and the studio promises to tell fincher they will kill 85 earlier in the movie as it is in the script. They assured him. Later they called after having their meeting with fincher and said they are going with fincher take to leave him alive to the end. The producer and script writer then quits the job.
Aiden Bennett
Fox was also unhappy with Fincher because he took too long. He would do 12-15 takes on everything. While fox studio would repeatedly tell him come on, hurry up it's just an alien movie not Lawrence of Arabia or gone with the wind.
Brody Collins
Another fincher quote on set while shooting in the microphone to entire crew and actors.
>it's amazing to me that Fox is the number one studio in the country >Because they are all such a bunch of morons
Of course that got back to the studio.
Colton Phillips
All that and Alien 3 Extended Cut(?) is pretty good.
Jacob Perry
I mean everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I have movies I love that are far from universally liked even but alien 3 is a terrible movie no matter which cut.
Come on. But on the subject of fincher. He once in a phone call with the fox vice president of production took a knife and started stabbing his desk until it was all in pieces in front of his line producer.
Andrew Hughes
Have not even reached the part about special effects issues of the movie lol
Or the editing.
Connor Davis
I find it entertaining. Alien is great and deaths are nice. Also the feeling of that rusty prison.
And I also like Resurrection and first AvP
Carson Morgan
So at one point it was just costing too much so they had to stop shooting. They couldn't wrap up the movie they just had to pack it all up and leave London because it was too expensive.
Once back in America they realise they have a lot of holes in the movie because they didn't finish shooting so they needed to find ways to fill the holes. That's where the editing begins.
Jack Nguyen
I can rewatch the 4th and AvP though. They are not terrible I'm with you. But alien 3... I only enjoyed the behind the scenes aspects of how the fuck it went so bad.
Andrew Parker
Well that but it is not terrible movie like it should been after all that.
Justin Green
>this thread
Austin Smith
First edit of the movie is over 3 hours long. Everyone hated it. So they order reshoots and new edits more editors get involved different cuts.
Different crew does the reshoots.
First cut some fucked up trivia. The original scene with newt autopsy was her full frontal of corpse and they show the autopsy opening the chest and all and it goes on for much longer and apparently it made people so sick at the studio they would walk out of the screening in disgust.
Camden Lee
rewatched it last week. It was a decent movie desu. The only charge would be them dropping the story from Aliens. Much better than anything that got created after A4
Jacob Myers
I'm pretty much nocars. Please explain why this is bad.
Ayden Turner
This is only a recent thing at the time too. Crispin Glover sued Universal for trying to perpetuate the idea he was in BTTF 2, using make up and old scenes and down playing the new actor. When that case was not thrown out by a judge it really expanded actors abilities to have control over their image and use in movies that they were not in. Imagine a world where Crispin Glover was in BTTF2 and such a settlement never happened in his favor and Alien 3 does whatever they want.
Hudson Green
Trivia.
Many scenes had Ripley in a bald cap. They spent 2 weeks 8 hours a day punching individual hair plugs into a cap made of her mold. Apparently Ripley had in her contract that if she had to reshoot and shave her head again they have to pay her 40.000 USD so they opted for a cap instead.
They also did 6 weeks of reshoots and had months of meetings between different reshoots because studio would sign on for a few scenes. Then when watching new edit agree they should have done the others as well and send the crew out to do it again including rebuilding sets again.
Joseph Fisher
Didn't know that. Interesting. As it should be also. Imagine what Disney would do with their new affection for CGI actors.
Brandon Ortiz
you dont need to be a car man to know that puthing any shit into a machine is bad for it
Sebastian Williams
The ending was of course also filled with problems. For one they didn't have an ending after all that time and no one could agree on one. Some wanted her to live. Some that she ended her life. Some that she end her life with the alien and some that she is taken by the weyland people.
Then they heard terminator 2 ending was gonna have the ending be terminator dies in the molten lead self sacrifice so that became a problem if some accused them of copying.
The crew called that end scene the penis that popped out of her stomach.
Kayden Price
its not thats probably someone in a rental
Daniel Martinez
Someone put Daisy Ridley in there.
Parker Hall
someone driving up the costs of renting cars
William Cook
Why are xenomorphs so slimy?
Connor Kelly
While still reshooting and before movie was done fincher one day stood up on set and said that's it I'm done and walked off. The end for his part.
After that new cuts were shortened by 30 minutes to make it better for theaters because the longer a movie is playing the less cinema goers end up coming to buy popcorn and drinks.
Jaxon Rivera
Alien 3 is underrated. Scrapping Aliens' happy end was a good decision as well as concluding Ripley's story (I consider Resurrection a spinoff rather than sequel because it has literally different Ripley). I'd say it's even better Alien movie than Cameron's action flick although it doesn't really expand the universe or adds anything new to the franchise (m-muh pulse rifles). All movies in the series are KINO (AVPs don't count as Alien movies of course), but most of them are underrated and hated by plebs for no valid reason.
Levi Gutierrez
Alien 4 is whedon garbage.
Chase Cox
Check your brightness settings, she's already there.
Camden Morris
At one point in the script the guy that let's out the alien actually teams up with it and go to kill Ripley with the alien.
Alien 3 is was and still is a hot mess. Aliens is an all time great movie. You can't compare the two. You people...
Brody Ortiz
Maybe they just hate having dry skin. I don't blame them.
Charles Martin
no it’s bad Aliens = Alien > Prometheus > Covenant > 3 > 4
Justin Myers
I consider it a bait
Ethan Clark
First composer and cuts of movie had orchestra and other music playing throughout the entire movie in all scenes even when alien attacks and they had to change new and cut music for those parts having to explain that it isn't scary.
Next cut was with a lot of low subwoofer sounds on the movie. While watching the screening people kept leaving and no one understood what was going on. Apparently they were so low hitting some frequencies making people stomachs shaking they had to go to the toilet and take a dump.
Gavin Moore
>Apparently they were so low hitting some frequencies making people stomachs shaking they had to go to the toilet and take a dump. topkek
Christopher Campbell
>FOX Reminder that for about 2 decades this was the most incompetent movie studio ever. It took Sony uberretards and Kathleen Kennedy do dethrone them only recently.
Oliver Thomas
Final music and score edit and sound effects were done separately and not edited together. Because fincher had by then left the movie and editor too. So they had to do it on their own. Then new editor added it. Neither composer or sound guys were happy with result and the mix between the 2 were never right as it should as it should be.
Isaiah Edwards
Yep at least sometimes masterpieces were made by fox some I would even argue perhaps in part of how fucked up the place was run. But when it went bad. Boy did it go bad and this movie takes the cake in behind the scenes fuckery.
I would agree Sony are the worst of all though. I would also love for the story behind the last Jedi to come out.
Caleb Smith
Lol some of the stuff about this movie, you couldn't make it up. I still wish i could see the wooden planet alien 3. Planet built by wood. All things on it wood. It travels through space and the people on it have no technology and live like monks.
Jose Price
In most cases it always came down to this fucker. Imagine Sup Forums spending years to develop a false Jewish strawman, cumulating all the kike stereotypes which accidentally led him to become a tulpa. Tom Rothman is to producing movies what Ed Wood was to directing them. He was praised for cutting the budget to save few millions, at the same time while making catastrophic decisions, costing Fox billions over the years. And guess what? That fucker works for Sony now. What a strange coincidence!
Matthew King
>Planet built by wood. >where a single match is a superweapon Great concept! Literally Battlefield Earth tier kino.
Grayson Perez
And yet Alien3 is a reasonably coherent film, that's the mindboggling part.
Ryder Sanchez
I know right lol
It did have lakes however and the atmosphere starts 10 feet above the wood buildings. They also had crops and one scene was them putting it all on fire to burn up the alien. It would be a nice ending no lose ties.
Anthony Rivera
Crispin Glover broke ground by the judge not throwing the case out. He ddin't successfully sue universal. He just showed that the court would indeed give grounds to his case. He eventually settled. I don't think anyone has ever actually sued and won a case like this, they all settle out of court. Still, its held you can't use an actors likeness/image without permission. Disney has permission in cases when they do, it's either in a contract or someone got paid.
Jaxon Barnes
Really? I heard the exact opposite rumor, that she was furious when she got on set and learned that Hicks and Newt had been killed off
Ryan Butler
Lol
Well fox had many terrible executives. They would even come to blows with each other over stuff. Maybe dude is a good boxer.
Oliver Cox
It never gets old reading about how much of a trainwreck Alien 3 is
Kayden Thompson
Probably both, wouldn't surprise me.
Ayden Harris
Yeah that didn't happen. Would have been nice but no she was for getting them both bumped off the movie.
Carson Hill
You can thank Fincher for that. I hate when someone shits on him while discussing Alien 3, not realizing he was the only man on the fucking planet trying to make this movie good. I mean, shit... the studio used to fax him revisions of the script during the filming stage. He could be ordered to change the scene he was literally filming at the very moment. How fucked up is that?
Charles Scott
Well, to be fair, Hicks was kind of a third wheel and >child roles >child stars Nothanx
Jace Sanders
Well he was also a part of the problem. Sorry but dude was making his first feature and it was a movie without a script. A movie he did not have an original vision for at least not until they already started shooting and dude was young. I don't blame him and things worked against him that were both unfair, accidents unlucky but also from inexperience and a temper at the time. He was terrible with people day 1. Obviously something that has changed.
He should never have gotten such a movie and responsibility to begin with as a first feature under those circumstances.
Anthony Cox
Sure but even then they should have let them live for a bit and then kill them or have them be safe back on the ship and say only she came with an escape pod.
It's like it starts and we learn they are dead right away. Then we learn everyone is a murderer and rapist. Then she sleeps with a mass murderer and likes him but he dies shortly after. Then the one hope of saving or escape this ship coming is already bad and not help but more problems. No fighting chance. Throw in a scene where she almost gets raped and an autopsy of the girl. Then learn she has one inside her and she will die no matter what. Suicide attempt a few times. Then end it with every one dead and she kills herself.
That's a movie with no one to root for or give a damn about. Worse yet it wasn't even scary not once.
But hey everything has fans.
Kayden Gray
They just went ahead and smashed his head in when they recreated the prop.
Carter Diaz
alien has a perfect structure for a unique movie. that's why any kinda sequel will be bad
Jaxson Turner
Except aliens.
Lucas Collins
Lol pretty sure that was a message too.
Zachary Perry
Alien was never scary, it was a glorified slasher with an occasionally tense atmosphere at its best. Alien 3 has its problems but at least it did things that people knew were going to be unpopular with audiences like killing off the retarded family dynamic from Aliens.
Nolan Green
Alien and aliens had many scary moments, general public very much thinks so. Perhaps not scary enough for you but remember first time watching them and every one else who all got scared. Alien 3 didn't work for me or anyone I know on first viewing. I guess alien 3 was good now because it was what no one wanted. Sorry but that is a hipster move, bad hipster.
Henry Campbell
i know it was a pun, but even if it was just more of what the first movie was, a sequel would still be bad. the best part of alien is the thriller and the tension, the alien itself is well-designed and complex enough for what the first movie asks, but not enough to make a link to a whole lore and fantastic universe. even if it was a really good movie, it would still feel out of place because the first movie probably wasn't thought to have a sequel
Adam Morales
True and aliens is also one of like a dozen exceptions in history of cinema where the sequel is great. It is an event when a movie goes against that trend which is practically physics of movie making, a law that sequels are never good.
I also don't care about learning too much about the aliens. Usually when it happens it just comes out lame and stupid. Prometheus.
Joseph Green
They should only do AvP as sequels and universe building for alien. Because then who cares if it is stupid or bad.
Hunter Flores
>Cameron's version was the best, they go back to earth and live as a family...
I know a lot of people like to jerk off to Aliens, but I was always happy with the decision to kill off Newt and that marine. Happy endings don't belong in a franchise like Alien.
They could have been more suave about it and kill them during the actual movie, delivering some more genuine shock value to it.
Matthew Cooper
She still has a good relationship with newt who went on to become a teacher or something, so no bad blood there at least
Brody King
I tried to convey sarcasm. Everything in the making of aliens 3 was terrible including his idea. Which was that they all go to earth and live as a family in a house and deal with trauma or something lol Ridley wanted to make Prometheus going to the alien homeworld and muh builders, and we saw how that went.
I do think as you say they could and should have done it a lot better though. Either don't have them die but exit the film possibly continue on with the ship or join her and she on the planet, perhaps in a dramatic way with 2 characters we care about which would add tension to it unlike bald rapist getting thrown into a moving fan propeller.
No one came out of alien 3 looking good except the ones who didn't work on it.
Charles Cox
That's nice. Hicks feels or at least felt different. But Sigourney just seems to believe and feel that creatively it is the right choice for her to be a loner. Not something personal towards them.
How they were offed was on the writers.
Juan Scott
Best is the wood planet. Just thinking about it gives me wood.
