It's a common theme in a lot of sitcoms, revivals weren't that big a thing back then so when it came time writers flipped the switch and made their last works the most suspenseful even when it fucks the entire experience.

There's was someone who worked on the show posting on pol about how the new season is going to be shit because of executive meddling and writing in their own storylines. Roseanne is going to be the butt of a lot of bad Trump jokes.

John Goodman and Roseanne had a falling out in the last couple of seasons and Goodman truly wanted off the show. To keep him from bailing, they basically tripled his pay while cutting the number of episodes he appeared in to try and keep the series alive.

Roseanne replied with the "Dan having a near fatal heart attack, him leaving Roseanne/coming back when she won the lottery only to start fucking another woman behind her back, and ultimately killed him off via voiceover.

They won a lottery, because (depending on the source, since it varies):

1. Roseanne had a mid-life crisis after her marriage to Tom Arnold collapsed and other various failed romance issues in her personal life post-divorce. In response, she use the lottery storyline to justify doing various "glamour" storylines to boost her self-esteem.

2. Roseanne spent a huge amount of money getting the US remake rights to Absolutely Fabulous. But ABC flat out killed the plans for the remake/held them hostage so Roseanne couldn't take the show to another network. However, Roseanne had already started work on scripts for the US version of AbFab and with the remake basically dead, she decided to use them for Roseanne and the lottery storyline was her way to justify the Connors hobnobbing with the wealthy and famous folks Patsy and Edina live alongside of.

3. The show was failing in the ratings and John Goodman was making a lot of noise about wanting the show to end, so he could start doing other projects. The lottery was the writers way to try and give the series a shot in the arm and revitalize it
