Subversion is not a value in and of itself. It's a story-telling tool with as much inherent quality as any other tool, and can be used or misused in equal measure depending on the capability of the story-teller using it. Neither JJ or Rian are particularly competent directors, and their "metacommentaries" are weak and uninspiring.

JJ sucks the old movies' dicks far too much for his nostalgic fanwank to be seen as anything other than simply that, and the people claiming TFA is a metacommentary on the series are reading far too much into his own goals with the series. Rian decided to deconstruct foundational elements of the series but forgot you have to build something new to replace the now broken foundation, so he's left the story in a jumbled mess of pieces.

A Star Wars film acting as a metacommentary is fine. A Star Wars film acting as a shitty metacommentary written by a third-rate hack is not.
