I'm sure she's a fine person and a decent actress, but this casting has corporate and marketing groupthink decisionmaking written all over it. The biggest reason she got the part was because some suits behind closed doors had a checklist and she ticked all the boxes. And now she's pretty much in it for life because the corporate gets free marketing/defending by the media because they're "#progressive"

I was shopping with my wife a few weeks ago and we saw a t-shirt in the woman's section at Target that showed a silhouette of Leia and just said "REBEL." And the funny thing is, the shirt only came in one fit, so the only women that could be wearing would be slim small-titted chicks anyway. I never said it wasn't for normies originally. Why do you assume I'm a giant dork? I could give two shits about Star Wars. I just wanted to state what I thought was the obvious message Disney and Lucasfilm were sending with this casting choice. Of course Star Wars was made for a casual audience in '77. The whole original trilogy was. But you also can't deny it was a huge part of geek culture throughout the past 3 decades. Disney knew this and capitalized on it. And the type of audience they want to allure with the movies is not the same as the OT's audience. Star Wars was made for kids. Now Disney is catering to the grownup kids who want their Star Wars movies to be political and progressive, rather than just fun popcorn flicks.

In many respects, I'd rather watch the prequel trilogy than the new one. At least those movies weren't pretending to be anything other than cheezy kid movies.
