He's based. Hasn't had an easy life either.
I can respect him
I absolutely love everything he directed in the 90's, my favorite nip director. Is his newer output any good?
he is great
Based indeed. Time to rewatch Violent Cop.
Right you are!
Came here as soon as I heard
F
literally who
is he a judge in a japanese cooking reality contest?
Hilarious and brilliant
wait is this the dude who made Takeshi's Castle?
This man, in my country he is nothing
Based. My favorite japanese actor.
"Never send a rabbit...to kill a fox"
doesnt afraid of anythin
Wasn't he the teacher in Battle Royale?
it's 2017 rabbits can kill foxes you specist pig
Yes.
Correct
I'm Outraged.
literally what
He's awesome
GTFO
BUT WHO IS HE?????
Good guy. Hana-bi is my favorite film of his
I'm Beyond Outraged.
If a pleb wanted to watch Takeshi Kitano's film, which should he start with?
inform me
Violent Cop.
japanese celebrity, most well known as a comedian. he's more recognized as a director everywhere else
go in order, it actually works with kitano's filmography since his earlier films are EXTREMELY underrated.
Brother
He grew up the youngest child in poor lower class household with a strict authoritarian mother and a father who was a yakuza
yeah and before that he was a part of 2 man comedy group
Sonatine
Then try Violent Cop.
His Zatoichi film.
Kino is Hana-bi or Kikujiro
Then you can try Dolls
For more Yakuza go for Outrage, Beyond Outrage, or Brother. Violent cop
If Brother wasn't cut down (we no likey artsy ching chongs) it would be better
...
>father who was a yakuza
>have a cool father
>still complain
>is he a judge in a japanese cooking reality contest?
Probably sometimes. Used to do a lot of cheap variety tv shows in Japan (which often involved hitting people with a pink rubber mallet) also happens to be a god tier film director. Best films were in the aftermath of his bike accident.
Also 90s kitano is best kitano.
>still thinks being in a gang or the fuckin yakuza for that matter is cool
yeah must be cool knowing your dad could die anytime due to gang related shit or you and your family could be harmed
Hana Bi is my single favourite film of all time, so I may be biased. Went up his own arse from that point onward though, Takeshis was just pure wanking himself off.
Pretty based
He was the best thing about Ghost in the Shell
but don't yakuza have money? otherwise, why be a yakuza at all?
HAPPY CHRISTMAS MR LAWRENCE
>since his earlier films are EXTREMELY underrated.
That film of his which originally had a title that was a mathematical equation that led to zero, it was called Boiling Point in the west for some reason, I originally thought was rubbish. But fuck me is it a comfy and original film when I watch it back.
Didn't he play a yakuza in outraged?
That movie was really nice, never expected this much testosterone from the japanese.
Blind Swordsman
And directed, edited etc. Kitano's a total powerhouse of cinema but not really liked in Japan for his films and only really known by film enthusiasts elsewhere. Damn shame as well. His stuff has a bit of a Tarantino vibe to it but predates taranchula and massively out does him.
When I say Tarantino vibe though I mean he's almost the exact opposite, whereas Tarantino likes to fill his films with meaningless chat Kitano fills his with meaningful silence. Where Tarantino uses full frontal violence to make a point Kitano does quick cuts during violent scenes to remove any sense of action from them, making them just ugly violence.
Zatoichi is a fantastic film, a lot of purists dislike it because of the original series it came from but the spin that Kitano put on it was bloody great.
Hana-Bi makes me cry everytime
boiling point is so good mane
it was comfy, confusing, edgy, and hilarious all at the same time. i knew it was a real treat with that single take bottle smashing scene at the bar, and the fact that kitano plays a piece of shit who isn't introduced until halfway through the film is hilarious
it's probably my favorite kitano so far. i saw getting any recently, which was trying to be a bit like boiling point with it's absurdity, but it didn't hit the same mark boiling point did. i think it's because boiling point has such a stark tone and whenever something funny happens it's out of place.
meme actor
reddit actor
>b-b-b-b-b-uuuuut he's not whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiite!
Fucking soy-right in effect here lads.
Takeshi gundan dogfight.
It's on youtube. I'm not embedding it & don't watch it.
Hana bi was great. Takeshi painted all of those pieces for the film
Yeah, the guy seems to get into every single creative industry he can get his hands on.
i want Outrage 3
It's the only thing I've ever seen him in and he was brilliant in that.
Might check out more of his shit.
I love him, his 90s films are so good. They're so personal, but don't get nearly as much respect as they deserve. His gangster films in particular say so much about who he was in that ~8 year span; his relation to his art, interest in violence and the shame from that, and some obvious but unspoken suicidal behaviors. I'd kill for a good critical biography of him to understand him as a person more
What do you take from the ending? The way I see it, like Takeshi's Castle and his video game, it's a huge joke on the audience who take this kind of hero fantasy stuff seriously. It's all just the fantasy of a retarded man taking a shit in a porta-potty.
It's fucking so kinographic. God damn that's a good movie.
One of the few times that the "it was all a dream" endings actually made sense and worked for the story rather than against it.
only seen outrage. so gruesome
gonna watch sonatine next probably
i think everything in boiling point happened, it's just those final scenes are a flashback.
sounds a bit depressing, but boiling point gravitates towards fantasy so much it's just absurd. again, the thing i love about boiling point is the realism mixed in with all this surreal humor. it's also early director kitano, meaning the scenes go on twice as long as they usually would. by the time he got to sonatine, he really got on the ball of editing. all three of his early films seem to have much less editing, which i like.
what was wrong with his sister?
He's the creator of hit comedy show MXC
Needs to do more Takeshi's Castle, so they have material with which to revive MXC. The guy who did Vic Romano's voice died though, so they'll have to find someone else, unfortunately.
>Needs to do more Takeshi's Castle
his old duo partner is in government now though and it wouldn't make sense to get a new partner noting how manzai culture works
Kenny finally made good, how about that.
Best part of Johnny Mnemonic, a great movie.
The choices we make.
>Cool father
>Gang member
Yeah, nah.
>but don't yakuza have money?
Generally in organized crime or gangs the "soldiers" don't actually have the money. It's a pyramid scheme. Everything flows upward. The only time you see, for example, drug dealers who are actually selling themselves on the street level with money is when it's some middle class white guy with a day job who sells pot and pills to his friends. A street level dealer that is part of an actual organization that is "nigger rich" or "hood rich" i.e. they have enough cash on hand to look like they have money to all the other poor fucks in the hood.
>otherwise, why be a yakuza at all?
Generally people join criminal gangs because they have no education or skills and have no avenue towards gaining and education or skills.
People like to glorify gangsters like in Good Fellas. But what they don't tell you in the movie is that Henry Hill couldn't read until he was in his fucking 30's and he fucking hated being a gangster because he didn't actually make a whole shit load of money and he was afraid of getting killed.
Thoughts on this Takeshi film?
Getting Any is very inconsistent, but has one of my favorite movie gags ever (gunman with coin trick).
He looks like a wax sculpture in that photo.
Look at this sexy mofo.
Getting old sucks man.
Absolutely love this man. I've been going through his films in order, Scene at the Sea is next for me.
I've been looking for posters of his movies, but this one is the only one I could find for cheap. There was a French poster for Violent Cop but that shit was 8200 yen.
IMO he hasn't made a great film since Dolls, but I could watch him in just about anything.
Impressive range, he handles serious and comic roles well.
