Carey Means, the voice of Frylock...

>barely getting by

He has a gofundme that I can't post here because it gets flagged as spam

Had no idea he's been through that. Must sting extra hard considering Dave and Dana still get work.

He's gonna be at Denver Comic Con, though, so hope he'll be okay.

and now this is all relevant?

The last few lines are as of this month, so yes.

Of course Frylock is living the JUST life. The episode where he tried to get with the girl who fixes his computer confirmed it.

Oh damn, had no idea.

How do capitalists do mental gymnastics to justify this? I'm honestly curious.

What the fuck kind of contract did he sign to not receive royalties? That's borderline criminal.

It sucks for him but he got what he was contracted for. You don't just automatically get royalties and voice acting doesn't pay great to begin with, that's why so many voice actors have so many roles.

There wasn't anything wrong with his performance so I've gotta wonder what else was going on that he hasn't gotten any other work.

Really, he doesn't get work? He probably has the most auditorily pleasing voice of the main ATHF cast, so that's a little surprising.

Well, yeah. Adult Swim only pretends to be alternative and hip when they're actually more corporate and swindling than the most Jewish of film executives.

Why should any pleb worker receive royalties? If you weren't born rich you're just a fucking peasant. Only the people funding the show should receive royalties, because they're the only ones taking a risk.

The thing is, his voice isn't unique or distinctive. 99% of cartoon work is making wacky noises for kids.

He's a huge pothead. That's probably where a lot of the money is going to.

He doesn't have to do voice work for cartoons. He could always look into games or even anime.

I'm not very savvy on the business side of voice-acting. How is it that someone is not paid at all for their voice on a show? Sounds nuts.

No, he got payed, he just isn't being payed for any rereleases or merchandise. It's bad practice, but it's legal.

He got paid minimum wage when he first recorded the voices. Why should he be paid more?

So, did he drink smoke or gamble away all his earnings from the show?

When you make bad choices, you got only yourself to blame. He should have negotiated a better contract or put money away.

Unless you're Simpsons-tier, most VA's don't make scratch. During the Namek arc of DBZ's Dub, Goku's VA was worried he wouldn't be able to pay the bills while Goku was in a coma.

Nice trips, that was my thought too. His delivery as Frylock was great too, I'm surprised he can't find work.

Sorry for sounding so dumb. I seriously didn't know any of this stuff. Didn't even know voice acting pays minimum wage. I always thought it was at the very least a buck or two above, holy crap.

Also didn't know they're not paid for every airing of the episode they're in but now that I do it seems obvious.

When you're an unknown, you take whatever you can. In this kind of situation it's either take the contract you're given or get nothing and hope someone else offers you something soon.

That's why it's usually considered a dick move to take advantage of people like this.

Voice acting, like any job, pays what you agree to work for. I know that this may seem strange, but when you work, you are not receiving your salary out of the generosity of your employer's heart; you are engaged in a transaction in which you sell your labor for a price agreed upon by you and the person purchasing it. If you're only making minimum wage, that says way more about you than it does your employer.

I don't know what Means got paid, but he got paid and that's the end of it from a contractual obligation standpoint. Residuals, merchandising, all of that stuff has to be agreed to - either in the contract you or your agent negotiate, or in the form of a standard agreement negotiated by your union (and my recollection is that voice acting is still non-union, but that may have changed since I really used to follow it)

AFAIK it's considered similar to being a waiter where you make very little wage but make it up in the longterm from royalties/tips.

That's why most actors take shitloads of jobs, and why it's important to be part of the union/guild so you get decent contracts, but you need to have a certain amount of experience before you can get into those, so when you're starting out, you get screwed. Unfortunately for Mr. Frylock his career didn't take off so he took a huge hit.

And he probably could have renegotiated for more money later on, but took one for the team knowing the budget was shit for this show anyway.

that's easy to say when you just define bad choices as anything that leads to bad things happening to you, and say that any bad choices you make are your fault. That way everyone gets exactly what they deserve with no injustice ever

I never knew that, that sucks. He really should be given some form of royalty for the show, considering how popular it got and how much it airs. It'd be different if he wasn't basically one of the three main voices for the show.

That's every bit as reductionist as . Carey isn't some hapless victim with no agency at the mercy of a vast multinational corporation, he's a grown ass man who took a job and didn't plan for what would come after. [AS] money was good enough for him at the time and he had fifteen years to renegotiate his contract if he felt like was being undervalued; or to find work elsewhere. The fact that the show was canceled and he's now out of work is immaterial, he's responsible for his own finances and if all the work he can get is as a dish washer despite being the star of a popular series then he has made poor choices.

Go to bed Shake

I guess you can say

This is

A Means to an end

Oh wait wait, I get it, you were just literally answering the question asked, right?

This implies that Aqua Teen Hunger Force would even exist in a socialist/communist society.
Unless you're an anarchist, in which case, carry on.
