High school is not as much of a transitory experience in America as it is in Japan. In America, high school is just the place that you dick around until you get to college where you actually start figuring out shit about yourself.

Also cartoons and comics are almost solely marketed to boys who marketers figure are not interested in romance.

>a genre non-existent in western comics
What is Archie?

How is Star vs. not "High School Romance as a genre"? If you're expecting something even more drama and pandering than that, then I want nothing to do with it.

Considering most of the fiction we are talking about is escapist in one way or another, people prefer different things. For example younger Japanese audience finds the school setting immensely relatable while older working/meet audience find it easier to self insert into. You'd notice most of MC in manga/anime are bland and on a certain level masochists but also overachievers. They don't have an other worldly trait about them but chicks still want to be around them.
Contrast to American audience, when talking about cape kids and adults find fiction of macho men and sexy women enticing. We are violent in nature maybe or just want to see cool shit. I don't really have an explanation for cartoons though considering cartoons in West are just so abstract in nature.

Companies haven't found a way to market to teenage girls, publishers don't like things that are different, and the best potential writers are making webcomics or writing e-books.

>Companies haven't found a way to market to teenage girls
oh but they did but i can't post it

THIS!

No high school is as much of a transition period on the west, given all the films and tv shows on it. It's not widely used in Sup Forums media for a number of reasons including but not limited to:
>Cartoons are mostly made for kids, and so the main characters are usually kids, 13 at the oldest
>Keeping the "inner child" alive is a common trope in western media, which doesn't fit a high school story tonally
>Most comic book writers have no idea have how teenagers talk or act and cant write them
>Comics usually pump up the sex appeal, which, especially now, is risky to do with teenage characters. Japan, conversely, is not why about putting d-cups on a 9 year-old.
We might see a slice of life high school cartoon in the coming years, since the demographic is slightly shifting, but it'll take time.

I always thought for the most part, the ages of the characters in anime are more or less the age demographic of the viewers? Like a lot of high school anime cuz a lot of high schoolers watch it.

I'm not sure, because YA novels and TV shows are absolutely rife with this stuff.

I guess the obvious reasons are because comics are still stuck in the superhero ghetto and because cartoons are still stuck in the kids entertainment ghetto.

It's a shame because manga and anime are making a killing in America by catering to that market, every time I go to the book store there's at least two fujos sitting there reading some pink-covered manga.

There are some exceptions of course and I know comic pubs have recently started to realize the untapped potential of the YA market.

Archie is another example of how there's this huge market for this stuff that only a few people are bothering with.

Because everyone who watches anime are teenagers.

Japan has a weird fascination with high school in general. Maybe the right word is fetishisation actually.

Because most animation in the west is aimed at young kids.
All the high school romance shit is live action, just look at shit like Twilight and Teen Wolf.
Even major movies like that shitty live action movie made by the Matrix trannies that had Channing Tatum in it.
All that stuff is aimed at high schoolers, namely girls.

I hope you don't think we don't also have that same fetishisation of high school here in the west user.
It's just lest apparent to us here on Sup Forums because, again, it's mainly live action.

fuck off weeaboo

I think it's less a fascination and more that the audience are largely high schoolers or college students.

Though in addition it might be how, like in the US, high school is looked at romantically as the best years in your life when you were at the height of your sociability but also had the fewest obligations financially or to a family.

I heard it's because Japanese have shit lives as adults. It's a country of workaholics that can't find the time to fuck.

Yeah, because all the dramas, cartoons, and even comics written about high school life never happened, right?

Pic related isn't really "highschool romance" per se, it's more of the "bonding over the apocalypse and our mutual body swapping/time traveling powers via adjacent timeline shenanigans" genre.

Though to be honest I understand the confusion, they're very similar genres.

>bonding over the apocalypse and our mutual body swapping/time traveling powers via adjacent timeline shenanigans
that's just the spice in the end is still a highschool romance

Because Sup Forums-stuff generally prefers realism while Sup Forums-stuff prefers surrealism. Can't do that much high school romance with surrealism

because its found more in other western mediums, just not Sup Forums related things

the Twilight books/movies, are a perfect example

>Sup Forums-stuff
>realism

Isn't that bit like saying most of Superman's adventures are really just fluff between the real plot of Clarke Kent and Lois' budding office relationship?

Yes, because it is and they are.

>weeaboo
Stop turning that word into the hipster.

wew lad

Have you seen cartoons lately? Do you really want to watch those things (SU, clerence, teen titans go, etc) try to get laid? Animators that can actually draw/animate in the industry are few and far between. In murrica anyway.

Star and Pacifica were/are hot

Well there are always the exeptions. If you squeeze a lump of coal hard enough, you'll get a diamond eventually.
If more american cartoons looked like wakfu, korra/avatar, or the old teen titans, it would be desirable, but 90% of cartoons look like shit.

>everything has to look like my chinese cartoons
you should go back to Sup Forums and stay there

korra and teen titans are murrican and wakfu is french you mong.

Because people's lives as happy functional human beings don't just end after high school in the west like they do in Japan.

At least, not all of them, anyway.

Japanese anime fans are teens.

American cartoon fans are a combination of preschoolers and 20-somethings.

They don't make "teen" themed shit in American cartoons because the audience would either be too young or too old to relate to it.

Most anime is surrealist. it's just there is so much anime being made that even if 1% of the total amount of anime truly sticks to realism, that's still like a lot of shows.

It's because the ability to climb the social ladder is much higher in the West, I think. Nip society is brutal and shoehorns you into roles. You get much less opportunities to really get a girl to like you. Americans can showboat, go bust, then make a lot of money and get all the girls they want. Nips are pretty much locked into whatever careers they get into after school.

Because it's boring as shit.

I hope to fuck that never comes to pass. Copying stale Japanese tropes is a last-ditch effort in creativity.

>oh but they did but i can't post it

Please don't be implying what I think you are.

Yeah, but something like SBTB is completely different from what Japanese stuff typically does with the high school setting. I mean it's difficult to see much resemblance between than and, say, something like Persona.

It used to be fairly common in girl comics and such up until the 1990s in Britain.

>We might see a slice of life high school cartoon in the coming years

If the script is anything good, it'll just become a live action.

I know it's hard to believe, but early nick excelled at SOL. Hey arnold, doug, as told by ginger. He'll even Disney gave it a try with pepper Ann and the weekenders.

But the main problem is that kids don't watch cartoons.

Oh please, who has the bigger audience for porn involving high school students? Don't act like this type of shit is very common in any developed country outside Japan:
>“It was probably one of the most awkward experiences for me,” Ostrovsky told Women in the World in a phone interview. “There’s this underage schoolgirl who you’re essentially paying money to spend time with.” Ostrovsky, at the insistence of the cafe’s proprietor, dons a pair of Hello Kitty slippers and is led into a private room, where he’s seated opposite a teenager in a schoolgirl uniform. They make small talk; she reads his fortune and serves him lemon tea. Though nothing sexual is insinuated, “It felt very weird, because of how artificial the entire exchange was,” Ostrovsky said. Half an hour of conversation there costs 3,000 yen, or about $30.

Japan's obsession with cutesy culture has taken a dark turn, with schoolgirls now offering themselves for "walking dates" with adult men. Last year the US State Department, in its annual report on human trafficking, flagged so-called joshi-kosei osanpo dates (that's Japanese for "high school walking") as fronts for commercial sex run by sophisticated criminal networks.
news.vice.com/video/schoolgirls-for-sale-in-japan

Japan has issues with schoolgirls.

Idk how it is in Japan, but in the US kids tend to fantasize about being more grown up than they are, because it means more power, more freedom. Elementary school famtasizes about the changing about of classrooms and private spaces of lockers. Middle school dreams about high school cool things like possibly owning a car and going to parties. High school dreams about college orgies and free-roaming.
The kids who dream about love, romance and sex are most concentrated in high school, which means most things of that nature are about people in college or early 20s, hence the CW.

Let's see there's all Archie stuff
As Told By Ginger
A decent amount of some of disney's cartoons like Kim Possible or Star Vs
Trouble

There's plenty of it out there. It just doesn't feel AS BIG as say tons of superhero stuff cause it doesn't have movies adapted from it.

Because the genre is mostly appropriated by the young adult novel medium opposed to the comic medium. I shit you not, romance comics were another casualty of Wertham and the Comics' Code from the 50s, even if it wasn't as big a kill as the horror and crime comics.

The (intended) American audience for this will go read a book about it more readily that go find a comic about it, regardless if this was caused by a censorship movement that lead to association norms of comics being for boys/kids/etc.

In Japan, reading manga is far more culturally accepted among different age groups so you have an audience for teen romance within comics just as much as with print.

most girls don't even have sex with the older men they 'date'. They slip them sleeping pills then go through their wallets for cards or to find where they work so the yakuza they're working for can set them up for shakedowns at a later date.

They're most def fucking the mobsters they work for though.

For the vast majority of Japanese, independent life effectively ends after high school. After that it's either a family or salary work or both.

On top of that, Japanese men in particular tend to want to vicariously live through the teenage anime characters. Especially if they're pathetic otaku who never got their dick wet during their school days. In high school harem anime they can pretend to fuck all the hot girls who passed them up in the past.

most anime and manga is directed at teenagers. western cartoons are directed at either children, and sometimes adults or a cross-generational audience, but rarely specifically teenagers. western comics are dominated by superheroes so it's a moot point there, the comics code killed off the romance genre.

Wow! Someone who actually understands how to write Superman. You should work for DC!

Unironically this. A slice-of-life drama will always go to live action, since it's a lot easier to film real people rather than make an animation out of things that are grounded in reality. Japan just has a much larger audience for animation

Even cape shit is more realist than Sup Forums stuff what the fuck are talking about
Because hogh school sucks for most people in the west. Especially for boys. Most of high school fiction in the west is target at girls who got to date the football team chad or the popular guy.
Westerns aren't into self inserting. Most boys in the west are more likely to hate the protagonist of a high school romance setting. And boys and men are the majority of comics

>Wertham and the Comics' Code from the 50s

How long ago does something have to have happened before you accept that there are other reasons the thing never came back?

If you CAN tell a story in live action, WHY would you do it as a comic?

Because they get made into live action scripts or written as conventional novels.
Doing that is cheaper and provides a larger audience.

Because we know it doesn't stick

It used be strong, like many other genres. Then the Capes rose to power.

Because people who read comics had a shitty high school experience.

Well like 80% of japanese media takes place in a highschool setting or with highschool characters.

They fuckin love highschool. I understand its because it is the last time they can actually be social human beings before becoming salarymen/housewives

>If more american cartoons looked like

Americans don't self insert, so there's nothing to gain from watching.

I hate japan, I want to see about the struggles of the 7 foot tall mega muscular junglebound nproud urban negroe's highschool! with grafitti on the walls, abrtions on the halls and gay gang rapes like a TURE super highaschol would be!
