Previous /hyw/:

Finally colored something

Is a webcomic a way to get into the animation industry? Like showing any form of past experience with meeting deadlines, etc? I'm going to make one regardless, with some animations in it, but I just got a little curious about it.

You need to make a pilot for any show in big scale, a manga if you're jap, and the whole series yourself if you live utside the US

Well, fuck. Toon boom here I come.

Can I post animation here? I need to "gitgud" first.

We have some animators coming from time to time, although I'm not sure if this is the best place to share if it's not a webcomic-related animation. Post it anyway.

Working a bit at the time.
A bit at the time.

This is just being nitpicky on my part but you should try using other fonts. Using just plain sans serif makes it lack emotion.

Most of the text on that page seems to be from a computer, so suits something impersonal. But the final "Energize" could be in a better comic font.

Seriously, if you want fonts for comics, go to Blambot.com (as listed in the Scrub Author's Goodie Bag ). They're designed by a professional comics letterer, and there are plenty of free fonts especially for independent comic creators.

best comic here honestly
page?

strangely yes, lately. lots of webcomickers gettin their own cartoons. but of course you have to do normal stuff too
serifs have no place in webcomics

arright gonna repost.

My story's just a mess of improvised shit, but I like to think it adds up to something pretty entertaining over time. Often, by total accident, something thematically cool happens. Like I accidentally foreshadowed something perfectly. Can't really praise myself any. I mean I think the dialogue's funny, but generally not feelin pride storywise.
Buuuut if we're talking characters, I think they're pretty great. That's where I put most of the focus, and I feel like I could easily see fandomy shit cropping up, with people shipping or making OCs or whatever. As it is, most of the praise I get is from people who fixate on one random minor character who is their favorite. That always feels swell.

forgot a chevron there.

>keep trying to draw this comic set to classical and medieval music
>keep ending up just drawing it to the greatest anthem of our times

youtu.be/AjPau5QYtYs

Are you implying The Safety Dance is not a genuine authentic piece of medieval music?

How could I be so
Careless to think such blasphemy
Thank you for giving me
This frank epiphany

That's why I said "plain". As user said text said by people shouting and similar can look -and blend with the setting- better with a special font that reflects it. There are a lot to choose from.

Pic related is not the best example but is the only one I have at hand for the moment.

with or with out speech bubble or a mix?

with, but draw them by hand. your art is begging for it

also
dealt*

thanks ill get right on that.

Seconding re: hand drawn speech balloons.

P1: This bastard is
P2: Crossbar capital I for "I want", centre align the text.
P3: Duplicated "so", you could probably drop the second one

good stuff thanks user.

heres an update with the fixes.

Really nice there

thanks! and also thanks to the user that helped me, very informative.

Have you ever seen any cartoon or listened to a song that just started a spark in you and inspired you enough to start your own webcomic? What is it's name?

fuck, I miss that comic

Awkward Zombie? But it's still ongoing

>Squint
Oh. For some reason I thought it was Not 'Super' At All

decided to post a wip image.

still not opt to sharing concept details yet (a bit nervous about it honestly) but definitely when i have the whole thing sketched out.

can share more for anyone interested to see.

course w'ere interested. look at that goodness

Clean lines with consistent thickness are my fetish

I'm jealous how good that looks

here is another with some color to it and added detail. i finished the page this screencap is from. took it post wip to show to a friend of mine.

Those many lines in the hair and the shades don't really do justice to the cleanness of the rest, but I'd still check it out.

yeah for one thing what's with the horizontal lines in the hair? also her boobs arent as well placed as before

I felt that the hair was pretty empty and unusual with no detail to it so i gave it some lines to make it look better imo but also feel better when thinking about it. tho i could see how i possibly went overboard with it.

i'll try reducing the amount to the hair. also experimenting with the hair to get it more appealing in shape. i feel that could also be a significant put off for some people with the lines.

I mean, the detail you've given is great if it's meant to look like wicker or rattan or something. remember how you did that, it looks good. but for hair, yeah, only the longitudinal lines, not horizontal ones

got a table at a convention and didn't sell anything all 3 days. Guess I better just kill myself

post your stuff nigga
was it your first time?

Finally getting around to working on this. I sketched it on 8.5x11 paper so I'm drawing at this resolution.
Should I persist with the binary brush or go with the standard?

Forgot pic

There's no story and its mostly porn
by mostly I mean completely and I can't post it here

...

were you selling like prints or full issues?
maybe your advertising wasn't great your art is good tho

looks good to me
some level of anti-aliasing will occur when you resize anyway

my comic.

on the last day we just gave the comics away for free just to get rid of them

How do I draw, Sup Forums?

If you're gonna not use speech bubbles, use speech marks instead

An user asked if I had colored images but I was only able to show up with one that was more than a year old. So it got me to take a crack at coloring again. Didn't turn out how I wanted it to but better than expected.

so post a link to it instead and describe it

I like this coloring! good choices too. we don't see enough muted burgundy and warm orange gold.

That was actually a great move, I mean unless you are super popular or have completely unique product your fanbase will grow slowly cheer up

Fanart will always be more popular than original work. Established comics and cartoons are more readily consumed. It would be like going to a bookstore and buying a book at random (assuming all they had to go by were a couple of pages). If your table was nothing but original work, then I'm not surprised it didn't sell, so don't think it's your work.
Next time, get a bigger fan base before getting a table, and then start with something like 70% fan art, 30% original work (10% of which should be comics). And work your way to 50:50.

>Next time, get a bigger fan base
yeah, thats so easy. thanks. All I had to do was be popular, now I know.
And all the prints were fan art.

you didn't mention that part. how the fuck didn't it work? it was good, right?

I'll get this before going to work.

I made some change to the font that was used. For the computer-like voice I use OCR-ii and for Rococo I use Anime Ace 2.0. Although I might go back to hand lettering if I have time.

Nah, but you flattered me. Its rococo.smackjeeves where I keep it. Incomprehensible 2007 version is rococo2007.smackjeeves maybe you can make sense of that.

That is a more nice choice of fonts indeed!

While we are at it I may check your webcomic too. Thanks for sharing.

>that feel when you drop a page that triggers a fuckhuge response

could you guys recommend some simple yet charming font? I cant find em or name them. The only one font i can grab is those generic weeb ass font people use on manga.

A.C.M.E. Secret Agent
Cartoon
Chalkboard
Culita
Domino Mask
Hobo Std
Noteworthy

Some user mentioned Gill Sans some threads ago

Thanks!

wicked, that change improved the interpretation of that page isolated, lookes wicked

what a feel it must be

i have never known this feel, fuck comics I don't even want to draw the rest of tonight anymore

The night is short user, make sure you are at full motivation force tomorrow morning!

Layout for page 5. Probably should make panel 3 larger or at least taller.

I like the art style

I haven't been in these thread recently. Has it been easier to keep threads alive with since the change was made to the new thread icon? I'm either going to revise it or make a completely new one depending on if it's going well or not.

For anyone who doesn't know I did the current one.

bump

Tell me /hyw/, do you see another joke besides the main one?
When I asked a friend for critique he said he didn't get why they were all wearing similar clothes in the second panel. I thought the joke about getting lost in a group of people who dress/look the same would be pretty simple but I guess not.
How do I know if a joke is actually funny and I don't just like it because it's silly?

terrible, unless you're 12. then this is acceptable

>Hey everyone! Pls suck my dick!

I was just asking if I should make a new image or not. Jesus christ. I haven't been here in forever so I didn't know if it actually helped anything or not.

It's been more or less the same, unfortunately
It's a nice image tho

Bummer. If anyone has an idea for something that might draw more attention I'll try it out.

Maybe we should extend it to "how's your /co project?" or something. That way animators and stuff feel more welcome but it differentiates it from just one off drawings like general art threads. Just a thought.

You image is fine, that guy is an asshole.
I did like the old one that was made to look like an old comic cover with the 10ct pricetag which was a bit self-ironic.
On a related note, who started with the numbering and were there webcomic threads before this semi-general emerged?

>How do I know if a joke is actually funny and I don't just like it because it's silly?

First step is sharing with family and friends and see what they think of your joke, since those circles tend to be not-so-harsh while voicing their opinions.

Later you can try here but don't expect everyone to be soft. For me, maybe it's because I'm not a native speaker but I don't get the joke. I mean, "as big as a planet" implies he is saying she is fat, but she doesn't look fat on any way that makes you immediately assume it.

This has always been a semi-general and the numbering was around too, but then the threads died and the guys that kept making them forgot to ass numbers and sometimes even hyw pics

There's some good guides on /ic/, if you want a tablet, you can't go wrong with a Wacom. If you're brand new to drawing my best advice is PRACTICE. start simple, but always push for new information.
>This guide helped me,

ALSO, DRAW FROM LIFE, NOT OTHER ARTIST. THAT WAS MY BIGGEST PITFALL FOR YEARS!!!

Damn, that's hard to explain. I've just been around so many people all throughout the years and just grabbed bits and pieces of their humor and personality and just kinda made it my own, so I never really knew how I could incorporate lots of humor into my writing. Mostly just like certain scenes where it just springs up into my head in a situation.

My guess is just studying certain groups or jokes that everyone can get and find generally funny.

Sometimes humor and come from messing with people's expectations of things. Damn, it's really hard to explain humor, isn't it?

I recently made a background, thoughts?

I like this one that some user edited a while ago

Your lack of improvement in every single aspect of comic making for all the years you've been doing this is embarrassing. Please stop posting.

Question.

Is it lame to have the main villain actually unable to make a choice other than being evil?

Mag-fucking-Neto

I guess it would depend on why he can't make other choices.

if you mean having the main villain be evil for evil's sake, then yes. if being evil is simply the best option for the character or will result in the best outcome, that's something you have to deal with in the backstory

So I don't think it's any of those. It's He's a machine programmed to do what he does. He doesn't know he's a machine.

That could work but then I feel like he shouldn't have too much focus during points when he would be expected to question what he's doing. It's a neat concept but it seems like it would be very easy to write boringly

So the big question in the story is how come he's leading a group of people whose victory gets him absolutely nothing to gain. That's the explanation.

That being said I agree, it could be very easy to write it boringly

>someone on hyw who can actually draw

color me surprised

I like that actually, it's like the android in Fallout 3. Charismatic, well-liked, I see it working best if a lot of the focus were on his actions and leadership and relationships with other characters, to distract from the fact that he has no actual stake in the conflict

You would have to portray him as fulfilled at the same time by other things in his life, which works well if he's a natural and likable leader, that way people will assume he's fighting for the sake of the group out of empathy

that could be a really cool mindfuck

Well if all goes according to plan and I can stretch this out a bit the cycle is Part 1 he finds out he's a machine and is killed upon finding out. Part 2 is he's revived about 2 decades later and continues his work. This time coming to grips with what he is and convinces himself that he does what he does not because of programming but because he truly believes in the cause.

i can't tell if he's the main villain or the hero
