Why was Rogue One so much more visually interesting than anything in the sequel trilogy so far? The death troopers, the vehicles, Jedha, Saw etc etc were all visually striking. Literally the only thing on the level of these things from the ST so far has been Kylo's lightsaber, and that got old after TFA

Fuck off retard, TLJ was fucking great and you just didn't get it.

I found a picture of you

Because Gareth was given more freedom from The Mouse than Jew Jew (not that he could ever do anything original) or Rian.

...

So is this worth a watch?

It's slightly better than the sequel trilogy.

It wasn't. It looked cheap as fuck and wasn't at all directed like a Star Wars film.

>Wasn't at all directed like a star wars film

Good.

Your image already proves the OP point wrong you retarded fuck. That looks far more visually striking and for that matter, unique than anything in the ST so far. Jedha was interesting, Chirrut looks cool in the middle of fucking proper stormtroopers.

>wasn't at all directed like a Star Wars film.
It followed George's original cinematic style much closer than both TFA and TLJ. There wasn't any snap zooms, dutch angles, or slow mo like those trainwrecks.

This looks terrible wow

TLJ was visually interesting, Rian is an infinitely better cinematographer than JJ, JJ has done nothing but spew visual diarrhea on screen for literally his entire career. It's flaws lie with some of the most atrocious writing to ever grace cinemas

You are correct that Rogue One is more visually interesting than either though

Agreed. I don't like the beginning of this movie too much, but at least it shows a vast, lived in universe, worthy of what the OT and PT set up.

The sequels feel like it's taking place in a single system with a few planets.

Rogue One was sadly a bit butchered in parts due to the reshoots. But it had some great moments, the final act is actually quite good.

>digital photography
>handheld in almost every action scene
>titles explaining every location (a Star Wars first)
>abomination CGI characters
Maybe his prequel cinematic style, it's nothing like the OT.

Because R1 was made by a SW fanboy and TLJ was made by someone who was so desperate for everyone to love his shitty OCs he trashed everything else.

Only the space scenes were worth a damn.

People that think this doesn't look like Star Wars haven't watched A New Hope recently.

>unironically shilling any scenes on the rathnar hauler as good cinema

It was supposed to look a movie somewhat shot IN the Star Wars universe.
I guess imagine if someone within the Star Wars galaxy wanted to make a war film about the first Rebel battle. This would be what it would look like.

Design elements are one thing, the way a film moves and feels is another.

the vader lava temple and the death star eclipse are kind of hokey

>Only the space scenes were worth a damn.
All two of them?

see

honest question, why does JJ hate space

in his star treks he took every opportunity to have the enterprise trashed in about 30 seconds so the action could move to kirk punching his way to victory? in TFA every battle other than the traitor escaping the star destroyer is right over the surface of a planet

>somewhat
*someone

All of the props, sets, and planets are based on the original Star Wars designs.
Mcquarrie and Joe Johnson design.

The sequel trilogy tried to double dip by advancing time and technology in the Star Wars universe. Picatinny rails and G36 rifles don't belong in Star Wars.

I can't speak for Trek, but in Star Wars every film after TESB only has one or two space scenes.

Rogue one also portrays the Empire as a legitimate threat so the plot is more tense. 2 empire star destroyers and a fucking gate almost held off the whole rebel fleet successfully. Darth Vader's star destroyer comes in and instantly win the battle for the Empire. The protagonists' sacrifices are also more reasonable, justified, and meaningful instead of being comical like in TLJ . It has problem with character development but at least the characters are still consistent though. The overall plot is decent and coherent unlike TFA and TLJ. The movie also respect the previous movies / established universe and introduce elements that break the previous movies

Easy. It's not part of the "main saga" so they could allow themselves to take risks.

Yes if you really like OT aesthetics and wanna see great star wars battle, both space and ground, with modern special effects. Don't expect memorable characters or interesting story though.

Star Wars has always taken OTHER stuff and starwarsified it. The ST tried to take Star Wars stuff and starwarsify it. That is why the ST if like that retarded clone from multiplicity.

>It has problem with character development but at least the characters are still consistent though.
In a way this film is like those old WW2 movies where it's just a bunch of guys and they gotta go blow something up in enemy territory. They don't have character arcs, they just all play off of each other and push the plot forward.

>it looks cheap

Yet your screenshot looks good!

>it looked cheap as fuck
Pause any scene from ANH and tell me it doesn't look cheap.

Blaster and gear designs in sequels are truly awful. Already mentioned G36s, Rey blaster, classic E-11 with white plastic slaped on them and AR15 style stocks to make them look new. There are even stormtroopers with modern chest rigs.

Garreth Edwards actually gave a fuck about making this film not only as epic in scope as possible, but visually consistant with ANH, while also standing out. It's telling that RO was shot digitally, but TLJ and TFA were shot on film and look worse than it. Rogue One sucked btw.

Tbh Rogue One is a pretty good flick when it’s just empire stuff

I do wish we’d have been able to see the original cut though because I can’t tell if what I liked is Gareth or Disney scenes
The fact I didn’t really like the ending for the most part probably points to not liking the mouses shit though

Yea it's true. There was almost, almost a good character arc involving jyn and Cassian. The dynamic between Jyn wishing to save her dad (and the rebel made that promise to have her joined) and Cassian being under order to execute him can make a very interesting plot. However, it wasn't quite developed completely and the screentime was taken away by other characters or events. However, at least most characters didn't act completely out of characters multiple times like in TFA and TLJ

>the director is the cinematographer
Stop pulling words you don't know out of your ass

ROTJ still has like the longest or one of the longest length space fleet battles in film

And it was boring. All of those scenes were BORING

Looks like a tv show

Agree with this

>lol the cinematographer chooses how the scenes are going to be shot
no you moron that's the directors job

the cinematographer is there to organize cameras and shit to record the shot, and the director might ask him for advice from time to time

Why are the nu trooper's thighs so thick? Why are the helmets so round and non threatning? Why are the new blasters either nerf guns or modern handguns with random shit on them?

Here's the thing. Re-shoots for movies happen all the time. They are so regular that Lucas himself would plan on doing about three weeks worth of reshoots and would make sure it wa a part of his contracts with the actors. Now, concerning these re-shoots, everyone, even Gareth, agreed that the final battle should be condensed so that everything with Cassian and Jyn takes place in the tower. (originally the vault is in a separate building. That's why they are seen running outside with the walkers shooting at them in the trailer.) The only reason Gareth didn't shoot them himself was because he was busy on another project. They were not done behind his back and once he saw the film in it's final state he approved of it. It's not like Disney did it without telling him.

You are a dumb motherfucker aren't you?

seeing the Imperial forces sort of doing "counterinsurgency" on Jedha, against a sort of radical and more ruthless rebel faction that was politically at odds with the "main" rebellion. That was a really nice twist in terms of "worldbuilding", even though the movie rushed through it.

Yeah, but TPM only has the Queen's ship running the blockade and the Naboo space battle at the end.
AOTC only has Jango and Obi-Wan in the asteroid field.
ROTS only has the opening space battle which only takes place for about 7 minutes.
Only ANH and TESB spend a lot of time in space.

It has all been garbage, Disney shill,

>A cinematographer or director of photography (sometimes shortened to DP or DOP) is the chief over the camera and light crews working on a film
>the director will typically convey to the cinematographer what is wanted from a scene visually, and allow the cinematographer latitude in achieving that effect.

The space battle actually looked a lot like an OT battle with updated CGI and all of the naval characters were fairly interesting looking and on screen.

Does anyone else feel like this has fellowship of the ring syndrome where it is almost unwatchable without the extended director's cut. I can't help but feel like we lost an hour and a half of footage.

If you cut CG Tarkin, and Leia, and have the extended cut footage. Just make the two brother Aliens tier grunts instead of Guardians of the Galaxy dropouts I feel like you would have the Star Wars movie we all wanted.

Did I say that the movie itself was good you retarded autist?

This isn't about the politics of the movie, it's about the visuals. Stop trying to fuck this thread up.

Are you stupid? All gear in the OT was repurposed military surplus

this

the movie needed to be a bit longer so it didn't have to rush through characterization and stuff

>cut CG Tarkin
NO!

Supposedly what we have was the original plan, but the shots like your pic and the reshot scenes we're recorded instead assuming that Disney wouldn't be okay with them killing off all the characters.

When they found out Disney was fine with everyone dying (considering they had to have a reason to not be in ANH), they went back and recorded what was originally planned.

Yeah it's surprisingly good

They don't look like shitty toys like the ST though.

I still cant believe that people think this was a good movie

I still can't believe it's not butter

It's not. It just looks good.

Yeah, I'm gonna need a source because this goes against everything I have read about this movie.

You're confusing fan pornography with visually interesting. It was a pretty bland movie to look at.

Boring as fuck too.

This desu. I prefer the design from the OT era and abit from the PT. The design of the ST doesn't really work for me feels like some marvel capeshit

>According to Edwards, the ending of the film was also subject to a number of changes. Initially, they had allowedseveral of the film’s main characters to survive the film, hedging that Disney might not allow for such a dark ending. Disney and Lucasfilm opted to go ahead with the darker overtones, and the film ended up with the entire team getting killed in the final Scarif battle. This all happened before cameras started rolling, so there likely isn’t any cut of the film with Jyn and Cassian flying out to safety.

Got my info slightly wrong. Apparently what I described happened, but before the movie was even shot.

I REALLY wanted this movie to be great. So disappointed that it was just okay...

I thought the movie was going to be bad. I'm happy that it was just okay. TFA and TLJ are actually bad though.

the only remotely watchable part of any piece of star wars media since ROTS premiered was the minute or so vader was on screen murdering rebels in rogue one.

if you enjoyed literally anything else you are not a true star wars and can honestly go fuck yourself

>b-but muh elite club
doesn't matter fuck off

>RotS
>watchable
Begon, fake star wars fan. Star wars hasn't been good since Empire

are retards like this genuinely illiterate or just genuinely unable to contain their autism whenever anything even related to the disney SW is mentioned?

>tryhard faggot tries to hate everything
almost as bad as sequelfags, kys

My favorite part about Rogue One is how much it enhances the attack on the Death Star in ANH. We see the heroic sacrifice of these unforgettable heroes like chinese man with staff, chinese man with big gun, middle eastern skinny man, swarthy mediterranean man, and bunny woman.

bunny woman was my favorite.

I wanted to fuck that rabbit.

>>>/OnePieceGeneral/

Wrong. Rian got almost total freedom

>haha look at this still you'd never see since it's a movie. Isnt it bad?

>RotS
>Bad

>Rian got almost total freedom
That's the problem. Nobody told him his ideas were either stupid or just flat out bad. Ironically George Lucas had the same problem with the prequels.
