It did take quite a bit to seriously harm the franchise.

The Force Awakens actually seemed like a decent start to a trilogy since it was just a very basic by the numbers retread where they brought up plenty stuff people could be nostalgic about. And you can hate JJ Abrams if you want, but his mystery box tactic when it comes to writing does get people engrossed in his stories.

The problems the franchise is dealing with seem to mostly come from not sticking with one writer's direction for their stories and then shoving in bullshit due to executives' politics.

Rogue One was originally going to be like a gritty war documentary, then gets changed up to make characters goofy like they're in some Joss Whedon story. Disney is fucking retarded to do this shit rather than sticking to particular visions.

Solo, I honestly don't know how bad it will do. Might do Rogue One numbers if it isn't terrible, but so far it looks terrible.

You don't have to do things like focus groups, but rather stick to what has already been proven to work.

Marvel did this by ensuring their movies tried keeping the characters similar to how they were in the comics that were successful and figuring out how they can easily do an origin story for any variety of superheroes by having the villain in the origin story just being an evil version of the hero.

With Star Wars, they could have repeated what worked in the original trilogy and popular franchises like they could find in the "extended universe".
