There's a sub-plot that Matt has erectile dysfunction. It's easy to miss, saw the movie recently and noticed.

Leo and Therapist don't make sense, he's broken as fuck and she's not really into him. But She's sexually frustrated.

I think it's more of a "I can fix you" thing than endearment.

Also, the baby is most likely Leo's.

Life doesn't always get wrapped up with a bow, shit gets messy. The therapist was just for more exploration of the trust/betrayal thing that the movie has woven into it - she trusts the person who ultimately betrays her, and betrays the one person who trusts her. There's a lot of ying/yang in the movie too - Costigan vs Sullivan, Costello vs. Queenan, with Dignam as the last man standing, who's morals and ethics were never questioned, who didn't betray anyone because he never trusted anyone.

The movie is all over the map with the plot, but the movie was all about the characters and the texture of Boston and the underworld and the cops, not an air tight, finely woven story. And that almost every scene has at least one memorable line, and that it's one of the best ensemble movies ever done.

I think it's more Costigan forces her to trust him and love him, because literally nobody else in the world does, after his mother dies.
Whereas Sullivan, who she does love, takes her for granted, can't/won't love her unless Frank allows him to, and betrays her trust. She'll lie for him, but she won't lie for the more honest Costigan, who's being ripped apart because he's living a lie.

She's there to show both sides of the same coin, Costigan and Sullivan are almost complete opposites - if they'd made Costigan ugly, it would have been perfect.

No, it's about betrayal and trust, and she's right in the middle of all of it.

It's more than a bit convenient that Costigan ends up with her, but her character exists to contrast him against Sullivan on a personal level.

I don't know. It makes sense for the cops to talk like that. A lot of them are old school Boston dudes whose great-grandfathers were cops, too. But for fucking everyone to have the accent is a bit grating and a lot of the accents in the movie are bad.
