It's a website for people too awkward to have friends but who are craving social validation. Thus, you end up with the circle jerky culture that pervades everything since people will literally say anything for upvotes. The contrarian and unranked nature of Sup Forums posts encourages dissent and hilarious shitposts, the nature of Reddit posts only encourages following what is popular.
In short, it's a website designed in its very foundation to appeal to the normie mindset by including a mechanism to enforce consensus on subjects.
